Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Global Food Price Increases and Repercussions on Africa: Which Public Policy Interventions are really appropriate?(2012-03)In this contribution the impacts of the global food price increases of 2010/2011 on Africa are assessed. The impacts are severe, but there are differences with regard of country groupings, social groups and sub-regions. The various impacts have to be studied carefully as these do not affect only the macro-economy and the poor people, but also the development options and the long-term development perspectives of Af- rica. However, definitions and classifications have to be clarified first to understand the transmission effects and the poverty impacts of the global food price increases. It has to be made clear which food items, which African countries and which country groupings are affected by the price increases on the world market. Fragile and conflict countries, food insecure countries and oil exporting countries are affected most by the global price increases of food products and especially of staple crops. The formative years and the role of the Research Group is highlighted below. We look back to thirty years of hard work, to increasing public awareness on Africa, and to interesting tasks. It was the mandate of the Yearbook to look at the real changes which have taken place in Africa and to encourage the most competent contributors to analyse these trends. The themes of the Yearbook which were selected over these 30 years are commented in short paragraphs to give an impression of the Highlights, the Messages, and the Outcomes. Numerous contributors, editors, and supporters give their views on the evolution of the Yearbook project and on the current strength of the publication. Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, 'Noise wars': The EU's 'Hushkit Regulation' : Environmental Protection or 'Eco'-protectionism?(2002-07); On May 4, 2000, the EU enacted the so-called 'hushkit regulation' with the stated aim of reducing aircraft noise levels by significantly curbing the use of hushkitted (i.e. muffled) or re-engined older-generation jet aeroplanes at Community airports. The USA, however, home of both the entire hushkit industry and the vast majority of the operators and owners of the potentially affected aircraft, immediately demanded the regulation's repeal, denouncing its purely protectionist intent and effects and threatening the EU with retaliatory action. After a lengthy political and legal controversy the EU, in October 2001, gave in and withdrew the legislation.
