Transition metal complexes of group 13 and heavy group 15 elements based on the acenaphthene framework
This Ph.D. thesis presents the preparation and characterization of transition metal complexes of ligands with group 13 and heavy group 15 elements based on the acenaphthene framework. In this context, consideration was given in particular to compounds with a boron, gallium, indium, antimony and bismuth center. Since some of these ligands tended to react with the used transition metals of groups 9, 10 and 11 via transmetalation reaction to the corresponding peri-substituted diphenylphosphine acenaphthyl transition metal compounds, characterizations of these have been carried out as well.

Synthesis, reactivity and applications of a novel PCP Pincer Ligand
    (2026-01-30)

Kinetic stabilization of low valent main group compounds
Highly reactive species, such as cations and radicals, are often proposed as intermediates in reaction mechanisms. The stabilization and isolation of such species is an ongoing challenge in chemistry. In this work a plethora of bis-substituted meta-terphenyl element compounds of group 13, 15 and 16 were synthesized and the first kinetically stabilized indinium ion (2,6-Mes2C6H3)2In+ as a 4 valence electron species, the first kinetically stabilized stibenium and bismuthenium ion (2,6-Mes2C6H3)2E+ (E = Sb, Bi) as 6 valence electron species and the first kinetically stabilized tellurenyl radical cation (2,6-Mes2C6H3)2Te*+ as a 7 valence electron species were successfully synthesized and fully characterized, opening a new area of compound classes.

Reactivity and redox behaviour of ferrocenyl substituted pnictogens and chalcogens

The molecular chemistry of low-valent cations of main group elements has sparked curiosity over the past decades, owing to their unique properties and the promise of a more abundant, cheaper alternative to transition metals in catalysis. Combining low-valent main group cations with the fruitful chemistry of the iconic ferrocene, this thesis explores the use of the monodentate ferrocenyl (Fc) unit as a ligand in low-coordinate cations of group 15 elements and their derivatives. Additionally, it reports the preparation, structural and spectroscopical characterisation of ferrocenyl substituted pnictogens and tellurides, together with their redox properties. The triferrocenylpnictogens were studied in detail in order to understand the electronic coupling in electrochemically generated monocations. The electron-rich nature of the Fc ligand allowed for the isolation and full characterisation of the diferrocenylpnictogenium ions. Their molecular structures revealed that such electrophiles are stabilised by intramolecular Fe…E (E = P, As, Sb, Bi) interactions, while still remaining Lewis superacids. The chemical reactivity of the diferrocenylphosphenium ion was investigated as well: the oxidative addition of diaryldichalcogenides, reactions with dienes, alkynes and allenes, and subsequent isolation of a Wheland intermediate of ferrocene all contribute to our understanding of the properties of such highly reactive species, and explore their potential in main-group catalysis.

The quest of radical cations of the heavier chalcogenides
In the course of this work various new compounds were synthetized and characterized by common methods. The well-defined dibenzodioxine type heterocycle phenoxatellurine (PT) was investigated in its behaviour towards single electron oxidating reagents, such as nitrosonium salts, resulting in diamagnetic double decker respectively triple decker structures which can be described as dimers of the elusive radical cation [PT]•+. The stacking derives not just from London dispersion interactions and non-covalent multi-centre bonding between the tellurium atoms, but also from SOMO-SOMO interactions between two radical cations [PT]•+, also known as “pancake” bonding, which can be realized due to the change in the conformation of the PT units upon oxidation. The oxidations with nitrosonium hexafluoroantimonate gave rise to a phenoxatellurine double decker cation, whereas the tetrafluoroborate salt gave rise to a triple decker structure. The reaction of PT with triflic acid led to relatively air stable triple decker structures in three different modifications, which were investigated by Hirshfeld surface analysis. Upon exposure to moist air for several weeks an oxo-bridged dimer or trimer structure evolved. Based on the well known behaviour as a donor the first PT charge-transfer complex with 1,2,5-thiadiazole derivatives was prepared and characterized. Upon gasphase cocrystalization a complex in ratio of 1:3 in favour of the thiadiazole acceptor was obtained. Furthermore an octahedral complex by the reaction of (CO)5MnBr with PT was obtained, that has two PT ligands situated in cis-position, similar to the structure described by Hieber and Kruck in 1962. In 1926 Drew discovered intensively colored solutions by dissolving PT in conc. sulphuric acid. Almost 100 years later the nature of one of those species, which is responsible for the color, has been unravelled. X-ray diffraction reveal a PT double decker structure with hydrogensulphate ions associated via secondary interactions. The condensation reaction of 4,4’-dimethyldiphenylether with tellurium tetrachloride afforded 2,8-dimethyl-10,10-dichlorophenoxatellurine which shows, compared to the unsubstituted PT, a planar structure in which the Cl atoms are arranged in the axial positions, while the two C atoms are arranged in the equatorial positions. Attempts on reducing the structure to 2,8-di-methylphenoxatellurine were unsuccessful. Isoelectronic to the neutral PT, dibenzo[b,e][1,4]iodaoxin-5-ium 4-methylbenzenesulphonate [C12H8OI][O3S(p-C6H4Me)] was prepared. The phenoxaiodonium ion possesses also a butterfly-like conformation with nearly identical I-C bond length compared to Te-C in phenoxatellurine. The first 8-methoxanaphthyltellurium compounds have been introduced enhancing the variety of peri-substitutes naphthyl and acenaphthyl species. Furthermore new acenaphthene compounds have been obtained with a diphenyphosphino-group in the 5-position and phenylchalcogenes in 6, opening a new path for oxidization to chalcogen radical cations. Moreover organotellurium compounds with bulky 2,6-dimesitylphenyl groups, namely 2,6-dimesitylsulphide, 2,6-dimesitylphenylselenide and 2,6-dimesitylphenyltelluride were synthetized and characterized. First attempts of oxidizing 2,6-dimesitylphenyltelluride with nitrosonium hexafluoroantimonate led to the 2,6-dimesitylphenylhydroxyltelluronium hexafluoroantimonate.

Small molecule activation mediated by metal ligand cooperation via a dearomatization/rearomatization reaction sequence using redox active pyridine based ligand-systems in transition metal complexes
This work demonstrates the bifunctional activation of different functional groups, predominantly C-O, C-N and S-O multiple bonds via metal-ligand-cooperation (MLC) under concomitant M—Y and C—Z (M = Re, Mn or Rh; Z = C or S; Y = N or O) bond formation triggered by a dearomatization/rearomatization reaction sequence in three different ligand systems based on simple 2-methyl-pyridine ligand frameworks. Eventually, the simple bidentate ligand frameworks showed similar reactivity with respect to the well-known tridentate pincer complexes, which previously showed such reaction sequences. The bond-activation reactions via MLC were investigated in rhenium(I), manganese(I) and rhodium(I) complexes. Due to the formation on anionic complexes the presented study also entails the investigation of effects imposed by the alkali counter cations with respect to the bound (activated) substrate in group 7 transition metal complexes (Re and Mn). Moreover, from a synthetic point of view, it is shown that the active dearomatized anionic complexes can be generated via two different synthetic routes: i.e. via double deprotonation or two electron reduction. The former contains the potential for the facile in situ preparation of such active cooperative species simply by the addition of base, without the need for strong reducing agents such as alkali metals. In addition to the cooperative binding of CO2, the anionic 2-amino/2-imino-methyl pyridine-based complexes show likewise the activation of further polarized multiple bonds such as aldehydes, ketones, nitriles and SO2. All activated carbonyl groups also show reversibility of the newly formed C-C and M-O (M = Re, Mn) bonds in exchange reactions of the activated substrate. The tridentate neutral Rh(I)-π complex with the newly developed ligand framework (dbap-py) shows, along with the activation of CO2, a cooperative binding of phenylisocyanate. The focus of the work is on the simplicity of the cooperative ligand frameworks, as well as the extended reactivity scope due to the direct interaction of the counterion with the activated substrate.

Functionalized Silyl-BINOLs and their Use as Building Blocks for the Synthesis of Chiral Sila-Macrocycles.
The axially chiral 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (BINOL) have been used as starting material to produce chiral organosilanes in moderate to excellent yields. Among them, hydrosilanes (S)-6,6'-bis(dimethylsilyl)-2,2'-dimethoxy-1,1'-binaphthyl (26), (S)-3,3'-bis(dimethylsilyl)-2,2'-dimethoxy-1,1'-binaphthyl (30), and (S)-4,4'-bis(dimethylsilyl)-6,6'-dichloro-2,2'-dimethoxy-1,1'-binaphthyl (35) are reported. These compounds were further converted into their respective silanols, (S)-6,6'-bis(dimethylhydroxysilyl)-2,2'-dimethoxy-1,1'-binaphthalene (26a), (S)-3,3'-bis(dimethylhydroxysilyl)-2,2'-dimethoxy-1,1'-binaphthalene (30a), and (S)-6,6'-dichloro-4,4'-bis(dimethylhydroxysilyl)-2,2'-dimethoxy-1,1'-binaphthalene (35a) by oxidation in the presence of Pearlmans catalyst in water. Also, chlorination of hydrosilanes 26, 30, and 35 with carbon tetrachloride and palladium dichloride afforded chlorosilanes (S)-6,6'-bis(dimethylchlorosilyl)-2,2'-dimethoxy-1,1'-binaphthalene (26b), (S)-3,3'-bis(dimethylchlorosilyl)-2,2'-dimethoxy-1,1'-binaphthalene (30b), and (S)-6,6'-dichloro-4,4'-bis(dimethylchlorosilyl)-2,2'-dimethoxy-1,1'-binaphthalene (35b) in quantitative yields. Additionally, the synthesis and characterization of novel vinylsilanes (S)-6,6'-bis(dimethylvinylsilyl)-2,2'-dimethoxy-1,1'-binaphthalene (27), (S)-3,3'-bis(dimethylvinylsilyl)-2,2'-dimethoxy-1,1'-binaphthalene (31), and (S)-6,6'-dichloro-4,4'-bis(dimethylvinylsilyl)-2,2'-dimethoxy-1,1'-binaphthalene (36) is described. Other chiral organosilanes containing chloromethylsilane groups were synthesized, from which novel compounds bearing organotin moieties were afforded. Besides, chiral sila-macrocycles were prepared using the above mentioned chiral organosilane building blocks. Thus, cyclic siloxanes (S,S)-2,2',10,10'-tetramethoxy-1,1',9,9'-bis(binaphthyl)-6,6',14,14'-octamethyltetrasiloxane (38) and (S,S)-2,2',10,10'-tetramethoxy-1,1',9,9'-bis(binaphthyl)-3,3',11,11'-octamethyltetrasiloxane (39) were obtained from hydrosilanes (26 and 30) or silanols (26a and 30a). Novel macrocycles (S,S)-2,2',10,10'-tetramethoxy-1,1',9,9'-bis(binaphthyl)-6,6',14,14'-octamethyldiethylsilane (41) and (S,S)-2,2',10,10'-tetramethoxy-1,1',9,9'-bis(binaphthyl)-3,3',11,11'-octamethyldiethylsilane (42) possessing an aliphatic bridge were conveniently prepared via hydrosilylation reaction of vinylsilanes (27 and 31) with hydrosilanes (26 and 30) using Karstedt catalyst, respectively. In addition, chlorosilanes (26b and 30b) were used to prepare macrocycles connected by an aromatic ligand. Besides, functionalization of macrocycles 38 - 42 by demethylation, bromination, and silylation was attempted.
