Zwischen Kunst, Kult und Kollaboration. Der deutsche kirchennahe "Kunst-Dienst" 1928 bis 1945 im Kontext
There are three main aspects the Kunst-Dienst (KD), which was founded in Dresden in February 1928, tried to teach until the thirties of the twentieth century: the religious-humanistic understanding of the world; a religious universal aim according to Paul Tillich´s Theory of cultural theologie (Kulturtheologie); the belief in a reform movement run by the Church in accordance with the progress in mastering nature and technology in the world of life, work and art; modern aesthetic approaches of Expressionism, New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit) and Deutscher Werkbund, aiming at reforming culture. So the KD with its art-teaching work could partly act as a supporter of an avant-garde. It tried to achieve qualifying and updating of the religious- clerical relation to modern arts and fought for modern architecture and industrial design. As an institution that had been personally, organizationally, economically and politically integrated into the Nazi Regime since 1933, the KD was not only used as an element for the establishment of an apparently attractive variety in the production, distribution and reception of art. Also in its art-teaching work, it can be seen as an example of "different", "right-wing" avant-garde, "useful", "conservative" or even "reactionary" modern art.

The historic design avant-garde of the 1910´s and 20´s in Germany developed a social attitude in architecture and interieur design connecting it to the upcoming mass culture. Thus functional objects and environment made apparent the basic process of industrial society. Modern post-war design related to this movement but at the same time failed to consider the current cultural transformation towards mass consumerism. And finally in so called postmodernism - under the premises of an event society - design ultimately lost its capacity to critically reflect these economic circumstances and changes. In our thoroughly aesthetizised life design is omnipresent and yet utterly weak. Whereas a socially relevant dimension of contemporary design would liberate itself from the dynamics of superficial appearances.

During the 19th and 20th century massive aesthetization processes can be observed by which the aesthetic assumes an important dimension of social interaction. Aesthetization affects not only the designed objects and environments but also the individual ways of perceiving and a knowinga . The aesthetic becomes increasingly involved in the production of meaning and in the development of subjective worldviews. Concerning this relevance of the aesthetic which is not anymore restrictable to the arts, it seems appropriate to ask for the aesthetic dimensions and potentials of the social practise and to explore the development of suitable competences. This investigationa s perspective aims to take the social relevance of the aesthetic as a medium of mediation into account and asks for the varied interrelations which exist between different reflecting forms (cognitive, emotional, aesthetic). It aims towards a power of judgement and a power to respond in everyday life.

Von der fragmentierten Rezeption zum totalen Werk : Intermediale Aspekte im Werk von Gerhard Rühm
Investigations into the intermedia aspects of Gerhard Rühm's work remain seldom, even today. Yet there is general consensus that Gerhard Rühm is a "master of boundary-crossing". The present work analyzes intermedia aspects in the artist's musical and literary, as well as artistic production. After an introduction outlining Gerhard Rühm's artistic development, it will set forth the theoretical framework for a definition of intermediality. Subsequently, a total of 26 works will be analyzed with respect to their intermedia aspects. By dividing the examples of work into three groups, those fluctuating between poetry and music, between fine art and music, and between fine art and poetry, an exemplary insight will be provided into almost every field of the artist's productivity. In addition, this thesis will present a selection of constantly recurring, overarching themes in Gerhard Rühm's creative work.
