Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Advancing semantic and digital communications through machine learning(2025-10-10) ;Beck, Edgar; ; ; Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly prevalent in daily life, driven by rapid advancements in Machine Learning (ML) since 2010. These breakthroughs, enabled by innovations such as specialized hardware, Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), and advances in training techniques, have allowed AI systems to match or even exceed human performance in tasks like autonomous driving and medical diagnostics, with systems such as ChatGPT and AlphaGo standing out as key examples. These achievements have raised public awareness and acceptance of AI technologies. In the realm of wireless communication, emerging applications such as virtual reality and autonomous systems are pushing traditional digital communication systems to their limits. Conventional content-agnostic approaches struggle to meet the growing demands for bandwidth, power efficiency, and low latency. This dissertation explores mastering these challenges by integrating ML techniques into wireless communication systems. It introduces CMDNet, a novel framework for symbol detection, designed to improve communication efficiency by combining strengths of traditional model-based designs with those of advanced ML methods. Furthermore, integrating semantic content into communications is identified as crucial for further enhancing system efficiency. Semantic communication aims at transmitting the meaning conveyed by the data rather than the exact bits, which can introduce a model deficit that challenges traditional communication designs. This challenge in design of semantic communication is addressed using advanced ML techniques, as demonstrated in the SINFONY approach. Together, these contributions demonstrate how ML advances, such as DNNs, can overcome existing limitations in terms of model and algorithmic deficits and significantly enhance the efficiency and capabilities of future communication systems.Dissertation123 69 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, High-Performance Approximate On-Chip CommunicationInterconnects do not gain from technology scaling as the computation units do. There is still no substitute for copper interconnects to meet the conductivity requirements and reduce dielectric permittivity. It is becoming more expensive to guarantee the interconnect's reliable error-free operation as the gains of technology scaling are diminishing. The on-chip communication is currently a bottleneck of the high-performance integrated circuits. Fundamental improvement of on-chip communication is essential. Approximate computing has been thoroughly investigated for the computation sub-systems. Recently, approximate computing has been extended to the communication domain. The idea is to trade transmission quality for energy or/and performance efficiency. Approximate communication, on the one hand, provides a practical solution to maintain the benefits of the technology scaling; and, on the other hand, exploits the gap between the accuracy requirements of the applications and that provided by communication sub-systems. Besides, the unfulfilled potential of full-system approximation can only be exploited by approximating all sub-systems, including the communication. However, prerequisites for the development and efficiency characterization of effective on-chip codings and approximate techniques are precise energy and delay models. Traditionally, delay and energy models do not consider variations, resulting in inaccurate and only partially useful models. The misalignment effect, that is, the variation in the delay of the transmitted signals has been conventionally overlooked. In this dissertation, the first high-level misalignment-aware energy and delay models for narrow multi-segment global interconnects are proposed to address the problem of conventional models. The proposed models have been evaluated using simulations. Results show a significant improvement in the accuracy of the energy and delay estimations. Three different techniques are proposed to exploit approximate computing's considerable potential in the communication domain. First, two memoryless encoding approaches for approximate communications to reduce the integer-value deviation are presented. Restricted to area-constrained applications, we propose a Combined Integer-Value (CIV) coding technique based on the input signals' swap and inversion. Moreover, a Crosstalk-Avoidance-based Integer-Value (CA-IV) coding technique for applications with a more relaxed area constraint is presented. The optimal mapping of the data words and codewords combined with the selective inversion of input signals minimizes the error magnitude in this coding technique. Second, taking into account the challenges of classical wave-pipelining in error-free operation, the concept of Stochastic Wave-Pipelining (SWP) communication is proposed. It relaxes the limiting constraints of the classical wave-pipelining and allows its practical implementation. Besides, extra performance improvement by accepting a tolerable error is achievable. Unlike most existing approximate techniques, SWP has the quality to be combined with other approximate techniques. Third, an Alternating Bit-Truncation (ABT) technique is introduced. ABT sets a certain number of LSBs to zero. The inactive lines are used as virtual shielding to shield the data lines. The inactive lines do not contribute to dynamic energy consumption, resulting in a very power-efficient technique. Besides, depending on the number of truncated lines, ABT reduces the crosstalk noise that leads to energy saving and performance improvement. This technique can be implemented with almost no overhead. A comprehensive experimental result validated the proposed approximate communication approaches. The proposed approximate communication methods' applicability is also studied in Network-on-Chip (NoC), where they are compared with a state-of-the-art compression technique. Results show the superiority of proposed techniques for different design criteria.Dissertation479 488 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Energy aware task allocation algorithms for wireless sensor networks(2018-05-11); ; ; Complex wireless sensor network (WSN) applications, such as those in Internet of things or in-network processing, are pushing the requirements of energy efficiency and long-term operation of the network drastically. Energy aware task allocation becomes crucial to extend the network lifetime, by efficiently distributing the tasks of applications among sensor nodes. Although task allocation has been deeply studied in wired systems, the resulting approaches are insufficient for WSNs due to limited battery resources and computing capability of WSN nodes, as well as the special wireless communication. This work focuses on designing energy aware task allocation algorithms to extend the network lifetime of WSNs. More precisely, this work firstly proposes a centralized static task allocation algorithm (CSTA) for cluster based WSNs. Since a WSN application can be modeled by a directed acyclic graph (DAG), the task allocation problem is formulated as partitioning the modeled DAG graph into two subgraphs: one for the slave node and the other for the master node. By using a binary vector variable to represent the partition cut, CSTA formulates the problem of maximizing network lifetime as a binary integer linear programming (BILP) problem. It provides one fixed time invariant partition cut (task allocation solution) for each slave node to balance the workload distribution of tasks. Moreover, motivated by the fact that using multiple partition cuts can achieve more balanced workload distribution, this work extends CSTA to a centralized dynamic task allocation algorithm, CDTA. By using a probability vector variable to stand for partition cuts with different weights, CDTA formulates the dynamic task allocation problem as a linear programing (LP) problem. Due to the high complexity of centralized algorithms, this work further proposes a very lightweight distributed optimal on-line task allocation algorithm (DOOTA). Through an indepth analysis, it proves that the optimal task allocation solution consists of at most two partition cuts for each slave nodes. Based on this analysis, DOOTA enables each slave node to calculate its own optimal task allocation solution by negotiating with the master node with a very short time. These contributions significantly improve the application performance for WSNs, but also for other domains, e.g, mobile edge/fog computing. Furthermore, the proposed task allocation algorithms are extended for different task scenarios and network structures, i.e., applications with conditional tasks, joint local and global applications and multi-hop mesh network. Given a condition triggered application, it is modeled by a DAG graph with conditional branches. This conditional DAG is further decomposed into multiple stationary DAG graphs without conditional branches according to the satisfaction probability of each condition. Based on this modeling, a static and a dynamic condition triggered task allocation algorithms (SCTTA and DCTTA) are proposed by considering the multiple stationary DAG simultaneously. Targeting the joint local and global applications, this work designs a static and a dynamic joint task allocation algorithms, SJTA and DJTA, based on BILP and LP, respectively. The modeling of local task allocation problem does not change, while the global task allocation problem is modeled by dividing the global DAG graph into different subgraphs mapping to the slave and master nodes. Besides the extensions for different task scenarios, this work presents a dynamic task allocation algorithm for multi-hop mesh networks (DTA-mhop) as well. The corresponding task allocation problem is modeled by dividing the DAG graph of each sensor node into multiple subgraphs mapping to itself, the routing and sink nodes. By using the summation of assigned tasks for each node, DTA-mhop formulates the lifetime maximization as a LP problem. The proposed task allocation algorithms are firstly evaluated using simulations and real WSN applications, in terms of network lifetime increase and algorithm runtime. In order to investigate the algorithm's performance in realistic scenarios, the CSTA, CDTA and DOOTA algorithms are implemented in a real WSN based on the OpenMote platform. Both the simulation and implementation results show that the network lifetime can be dramatically extended. Remarkably, the network lifetime improvements are more significant for addressing complex applications. The proposed task allocation algorithms are therefore suitable for WSNs, and they can also be easily adapted to other wireless domains.Dissertation513 223 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Dissertation303 145 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Software radio systems engineering for URLLC Industrie 4.0 applications(2023-07-20); ; ; ; New use cases for wireless communication that require Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC) systems open a new trove of challenges. In this thesis we address the wireless software radio systems engineering challenges to achieve lower latency and higher reliability. Furthermore, we present a thorough analysis of PHYsical layer (PHY) Digital Signal Processing (DSP) concepts and their impact on latency and reliability. These concepts are used in a Medium-Access-Control (MAC) layer Scheduling and Resource Allocation (S&RA) analysis to find suitable approaches for S&RA that minimize burst errors. Finally, our PHY and MAC analysis results in a demonstrator that verifies our approaches in a testbed. Thus, it is possible to meet the requirements of URLLC systems with a full software Cloud Radio Access Network (Cloud RAN) implementation with distributed Access Points (APs).Dissertation174 138 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Dissertation322 221
