    Multi-scale analysis of mass transport within regular and irregular monolithic catalyst supports
    Strukturierte Reaktoren, die mit monolithischen Katalysatorträgern ausgestattet sind, werden häufig für verschiedene Reaktionssysteme verwendet. Es wurde angenommen, dass die geometrischen Parameter der verwendeten Monolithen eine wichtige Rolle bei der Steuerung der Transport- und Transfereigenschaften der strukturierten Reaktoren spielen. Die unregelmäßigen monolithischen Katalysatorträger, wie z.B. offenzellige Schäume, haben komplexe und vernetzte Geometrien, die die Herausforderungen bei der Analyse der Transportphänomene in ihnen verstärken. Außerdem erfordert die Durchführung einer realistischen Analyse die Entwicklung von experimentellen und numerischen Werkzeugen, die in der Lage sind, die strukturierten Reaktoren, die mit solch komplexen und undurchsichtigen Monolithen ausgestattet sind, vollflächig zu analysieren. Die numerische Strömungssimulation (Computational Fluid Dynamics, CFD) ist ein bekanntes numerisches Werkzeug für die Untersuchung von Transportphänomenen, das im Vergleich zu experimentellen Methoden wesentlich kostengünstiger ist. Die Ergebnisse von CFD-Simulationen müssen jedoch mit den experimentellen Methoden abgeglichen werden, um ihre Plausibilität zu beweisen. Aus diesem Grund sollte ein experimentelles Werkzeug eingesetzt werden, das in der Lage ist, die oben erwähnte Vollfeldanalyse in einem solch undurchsichtigen und komplex strukturierten Reaktor durchzuführen. Da Transportphänomene in monolithischen Strukturen in hohem Maße von der lokalen Geometrie abhängen, sollte die eingesetzte experimentelle Methode nicht-invasiv sein. Unter den möglichen experimentellen Methoden ist die kernmagnetische Resonanztechnik (NMR) in der Lage, eine nicht-invasive Ganzfeldanalyse innerhalb undurchsichtiger und komplexer Strukturen durchzuführen. In dieser Dissertation wurde der Massentransport in Festbettreaktoren untersucht, indem die Gasströmung in katalytischen Monolithen sowohl auf makroskopischer als auch auf mikroskopischer Ebene untersucht wurde. Die identische Struktur der Monolithen wurde in Simulationen und Messungen verwendet. In einem ersten Ansatz wurde die realistische Struktur der Monolithen in CFD-Simulationen implementiert, indem die Monolithen mit der μCT-Bildgebungstechnik gescannt und ihre Strukturen mit CAD-Software rekonstruiert wurden. In einem zweiten Ansatz wurde die CAD-Software verwendet, um die Monolithenstrukturen zu entwerfen und zu optimieren, die dann mit der 3D-Drucktechnologie gedruckt und für experimentelle Messungen verwendet wurden. Es wurde eine makroskopische Analyse auf Porenebene durchgeführt, um Geschwindigkeitsfelder und -profile innerhalb der Monolithen zu erhalten. Zu diesem Zweck wurden CFD-Simulationen mit der auf finiten Volumen basierenden Software OpenFOAM durchgeführt. Der Standard Navier-Stokes Solver für inkompressible Flüssigkeiten wurde für die CFD-Simulationen verwendet. Aufgrund der geometrischen Komplexität der offenzelligen Schaumstoffstruktur wurde der Abgleich der erhaltenen CFD- und MRV-Geschwindigkeitsfelder mit Hilfe einer Bildverarbeitungsmethode durchgeführt. Dieses In-house-Bildverarbeitungstool wurde implementiert, um die Qualität der Übereinstimmung zwischen den aus Simulationen und Messungen gewonnenen Geschwindigkeitsfeldern zu bestimmen. Die Wichtigkeit der numerischen Ganzfeldanalyse für den Erhalt realistischer Geschwindigkeitsfelder und -profile in offenzelligen Schäumen wurde nachgewiesen. Ein ähnliches hydrodynamisches Verhalten der Strömung im Eingangs- und Endbereich von Wabenmonolithen wurde beobachtet. Der qualitative und quantitative Vergleich der Vollfeld-CFD-Simulation und der experimentellen Ergebnisse untermauerte die Zuverlässigkeit beider Methoden für die makroskalige Analyse des Massentransports in Festbettreaktoren. Der Einfluss der strukturellen Parameter des Monolithen, der geometrischen Artefakte und der Probeflüssigkeit auf die Qualität der Übereinstimmung zwischen numerischen und experimentellen Ergebnissen wurde untersucht. Zusätzlich wurden die Ursachen für Abweichungen zwischen numerischen und experimentellen Ergebnissen und ihr Beitrag zur Diskrepanz ermittelt. Experimentelle makroskopische Messungen wurden mit Hilfe einer NMR-basierten Methode durchgeführt, die auch als Magnetresonanz-Velocimetrie (MRV) bekannt ist. Die mikroskopische Analyse des Gasflusses wurde mit Hilfe eines räumlich aufgelösten Pulsed Field Gradient Stimulated Echo (PFG-STE) durchgeführt, um die Verdrängungsverteilung des Gases zu erhalten und den Beitrag der Diffusion zum Massentransport zu untersuchen. Diese Messungen zeigten, dass reguläre Navier-Stokes-CFD-Simulationen nicht in der Lage sind, die Diffusionsbewegung des Gases und mikroskopische Details der Monolithenstrukturen zu berücksichtigen, die in den rekonstruierten Monolithen aus μCT-Bildern nicht zu erkennen waren. Die Durchführung von Ganzfeld-CFD-Simulationen im Mikrobereich unter Berücksichtigung der molekularen Interaktion und damit der Diffusion ist für Festbettreaktoren sehr zeitaufwändig. Insbesondere bei unregelmäßigen katalytischen Monolithen wie offenzelligen Schäumen, die eine komplexe Struktur aufweisen. Es wurde die Hypothese aufgestellt, dass die Kopplung von Navier-Stokes CFD-Simulationen mit einem Partikelverfolgungslöser, der die Diffusionsbewegung von Partikeln berücksichtigt, deren Beschränkung bei der Vorhersage der Verdrängungsverteilung von Gasströmen innerhalb katalytischer Monolithen überwinden kann. Dementsprechend wurden die Ergebnisse der regulären CFD-Simulationen mit einem neuartigen Partikelverfolgungslöser disTrackFOAM gekoppelt, der am Institut für Chemische Reaktionstechnik der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg entwickelt wurde. Die gekoppelten CFD-Simulationen und disTrackFoam-Ergebnisse, die in dieser Arbeit als CFD-PT-Simulationen bezeichnet werden, zeigten im Vergleich zu den experimentellen Messungen eine gute Übereinstimmung. Das bestätigt die Zuverlässigkeit der verwendeten experimentellen und numerischen Methoden bei der mikroskaligen Analyse von Gasströmungen in Festbettreaktoren.

    Experimental Investigation of Local Hydrodynamics and Chemical Reactions in Taylor Flows Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging
    In today's industrial processes reactions in dispersed gas–liquid systems are of major importance. Many products originate from gas–liquid reactions inside the bubble wake, acting as a mixing zone. High reaction yields are mainly influenced by the hydrodynamics within these zones. However, undisturbed hydrodynamic measurements of low viscous systems inside the bubble wakes are lacking. In this work we report on non-invasive MRI of gas–liquid Taylor flows. A detailed explanation of the developed MRI setup and sequence is given.

    Modeling of electrochemical oxide film growth – impact of band-to-band tunneling
    (Elsevier Science, 2022-01-06) ; ;
    The Point Defect Model (PDM) describes the corrosion resistance properties of oxide films based on interfacial reactions and defect transport, which are affected by the electric field inside the oxide film. The PDM assumes a constant electric field strength due to band-to-band tunneling (BTBT) of electrons and the separation of electrons and holes by high electric fields. In this manuscript we present a more complex expansion of the common models to simulate steady state oxide films to test this assumption. The R-PDM was extended by including the transport of electrons and holes and BTBT. It could be shown that BTBT only occurs in very rare cases of narrow band gaps and high electric fields and the impact of electrons and holes does indeed lead to a buffering effect on the electric field, but does not lead to a constant electric field strength. Modeling the transport of electrons and holes on the oxide film allows to specifically estimate their potential impact on the film growth. Especially during modeling of oxide films with narrow band gap and/or electrochemical reactions at the film/solution interface the electrons and holes needs to be included to the model.

    Modeling of electrochemical oxide film growth-a PDM refinement
    (Elsevier Science, 2022-01-07) ; ;
    The Point Defect Model (PDM) is known for over 40 years and has brought deeper insight to the understanding of passivity. During the last decades it has seen several changes and refinements, and it has been widely used to analyze growth kinetics of different alloys. Nevertheless, the model has been based on still unconfirmed assumptions, as constant and potential independent electric field strength. To overcome this limitation, we introduce a Refined PDM (R-PDM) in which we replace those assumptions by using additional equations for charge distribution including new physically valid boundary conditions based on considering finite dimensions for the defects by introduction of two defect layer at the film boundaries and by calculating the potential drop at the surface of the film towards the solution over the compact double layer. The calculations by the R-PDM show that the original PDM assumptions are only valid for very specific parameter combinations of oxide film growth and vacancies transport and cannot generally be taken for granted. We believe our findings of electric field and potential drop dependency on the external potential to pave the way for a more realistic description of passive layer formation.

    Pore-scale analysis of axial and radial dispersion coefficients of gas flow in macroporous foam monoliths using NMR-based displacement measurements
    A micro-scale analysis of mass transport in ceramic foams that are used as catalyst supports in gas phase reactions is of high interest. Although the effects of flow rate and foam parameters on the radial and axial dispersion are known for liquid flows, no pore-scale experimental analysis has been yet reported to correlate the mechanical and diffusional dispersion of gas flows to the geometry of open-cell foams. Here, a spatially resolved Pulsed Field Gradient NMR method is applied to determine dispersion coefficients of thermally polarized gas along axial and transversal directions of open-cell foams. The comparative study of three commercial foam samples with different morphologies shows the effect of open porosity, window size, and flow rate on gas dispersion. Additionally, the influence of mechanical and diffusional dispersion at each flow rate is investigated for individual samples. By observing the transition from diffusional dispersion to mechanically driven dispersion of gas, it is found that diffusional dispersion plays an important role, even at higher flow rates after a transition from Darcy to Darcy-Forchheimer regime occurs. The measured values for dispersion coefficients of methane can be directly used in pseudo-heterogeneous models for the methanation reaction.

    Electrochemical Behavior of Single CuO Nanoparticles: Implications for the Assessment of their Environmental Fate
    The electrochemical behavior of copper oxide nanoparticles is investigated at both the single particle and at the ensemble level in neutral aqueous solutions through the electrode-particle collision method and cyclic voltammetry, respectively. The influence of Cl− and NO3− anions on the electrochemical processes occurring at the nanoparticles is further evaluated. The electroactivity of CuO nanoparticles is found to differ between the two types of experiments. At the single-particle scale, the reduction of the CuO nanoparticles proceeds to a higher extent in the presence of chloride ion than of nitrate ion containing solutions. However, at the multiparticle scale the CuO reduction proceeds to the same extent regardless of the type of anions present in solution. The implications for assessing realistically the environmental fate and therefore the toxicity of metal-based nanoparticles in general, and copper-based nanoparticles in particular, are discussed.

    The impact of electric field on the demulsification efficiency in an electro-coalescence process
    In this study, the influence of the electric field and its determining parameters such as voltage, inter-electrode distance and frequency on the demulsification efficiency of a water-in-oil emulsion was studied. The numerical analysis showed that the water droplets trapped onto the hydrophobic titanium dioxide (TiO2) coated electrodes and at 2 mm inter-electrode distance can increase the electric field intensity above 300 kV/m, where droplet rupture takes place. Experimental study showed highest demulsification efficiency of 76% while applying AC voltage of 250 V, frequency of 200 kHz and inter-electrode distance of 4 mm.
