Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Entwicklung einer systematischen Vorgehensweise für bionischen Leichtbau(2015-09-16); ; ; In the science of engineering there is knowledge about a well-established procedure for constructing lightweight designs. A critical step within this procedure is the search for a suitable concept. In the technical field, this critical step is usually solved through practical experience or by using existing constructions serving as models. In nature the evolution has created mature constructional principles which can serve as models for technical lightweight constructions. According to Darwin, only the best adapted individual survives the process of natural selection. Plankton organisms for example have developed highly optimized lightweight shells over several billion years. On the one side they need to have extremely stable and defensive structural components in order to defend themselves against predators. On the other side they must be very economical with their use of construction material to prevent them from sinking into water depths where photosynthesis is no longer possible. In this context, this dissertation examines how to systematically transfer biological construction principles to find innovative technical lightweight solutions. Therefore, a systematical method for building bionic lightweight designs is developed. It uses the potential of plankton shells in order to identify preliminary lightweight designs. To integrate this bionic method into the acknowledged standards of engineering, an addition to the well-established developing process is made. Firstly, the selection process will be examined. Its role is it to identify one or more natural models which suit the technical purpose. A specific search feature enables the rapid finding of suitable natural models within a knowledge repository. A simplified evaluation method is introduced and allows an objective qualification of several constructions regarding load cases. The abstraction of the biological construction principles is then examined with the help of a modified topology optimization. In the next step, parametric optimization is used as a tool to further specialize the constructional principles. The considered methods and tools are finally tested and examined by applying them to a real life case. In this regard, a foundation structure for offshore wind energy plants is designed.Dissertation890 562 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Approach to identify product and process state drivers in manufacturing systems using supervised machine learning(2014-11-24); ; ; The developed concept allows identifying relevant state drivers of complex, multi-stage manufacturing systems holistically. It is able to utilize complex, diverse and high-dimensional data sets which often occur in manufacturing applications and integrate the important process intra- and inter-relations. The evaluation was conducted by using three different scenarios from distinctive manufacturing domains (aviation, chemical and semiconductor). The evaluation confirmed that it is possible to incorporate implicit process intra- and inter-relations on process as well as programme level through applying SVM based feature ranking. The analysis outcome presents a direct benefit for practitioners in form of the most important process parameters and state characteristics, so-called state drivers, of a manufacturing system. Given the increasing availability of data and information, this selection support can be directly utilized in, e.g., quality monitoring and advanced process control.Dissertation499 311 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Mediating skills on risk management for improving the resilience of Supply Networks by developing and using a serious gameGiven their importance, the need for resilience and the management of risk within Supply Networks, means that engineering students need a solid under-standing of these issues. An innovative way of meeting this need is through the use of serious games. Serious games allow an active experience on how differ-ent factors influencethe flexibility, vulnerability and capabilities in Supply Networks and allow the students to apply knowledge and methods acquired from theory. This supports their ability to understand, analyse and evaluate how different factors contribute to the resilience. The experience gained within the game will contribute to the students abilities to construct new knowledge based on their active observation and reflection of the environment when they later work in a dynamic environment in industry. This game, Beware, was developed for use in a blended learning environment. It is a part of a course for engineering master students at the University of Bremen. It was found that the game was effective in mediating the topic of risk management to the students espscially in supporting their ability of applying methods, analyse the different interactions and the game play as well as to support the assessment of how their decision-making affected the simulated network.Dissertation582 1369 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Trust in Sharing Resources in Logistics Collaboration(2018-05-09); ; ; Collaboration on resource sharing advocates a joint usage of resources by multiple parties (actors) to attain mutual benefits. Resource sharing becomes vital when resources under consideration are scarce, challenging, and expensive to attain; as well when they are idle or underutilized. In collaborative logistics, resource sharing entails the joint usage of the physical and non-physical assets. Shared assets include the transportation vehicles (trucks), warehouses, distribution centers, information, on-demand staffing, and logistics services offered under cloud computing. Through sharing, collaborating partners in logistics can reduce costs and harms to the environment, but also improve the efficiency of logistical functions. Although collaborative sharing is beneficial, still many difficulties impede its uptake. The difficulties include how to choose partners, establish and maintain trust among partners involved. Indeed, in both academia and industry, low-level trust inhibits the collaboration critically on sharing logistics resources. To this end, the present dissertation addresses the trust problem encountered by collaborating partners when they are sharing logistics resources. It deals with the trust problem by developing the Trust Mechanism (TrustMech) concept. The primary role of the TrustMech is to help logistics stakeholders acquire the far-reaching understanding about the trustworthiness of prospective networks of sharing they configure, before advancing them to an implementation stage. The TrustMech stands on a mitigation approach that focuses on estimating outcomes of trust uncertainties a rather than a their sources. Henceforth, this dissertation advances on estimating outcomes of trust uncertainties to answer the following central Research Question (RQ): how can collaborating partners acquire the far-reaching understanding about the trustworthiness of prospective networks of sharing they configure? An approach to the research problem, which as well answers the RQ proceeds as follows. The first steps involve establishing behavioral factors and parameters, which influence trust in collaborative sharing of logistics resources. The second stage entails establishing a conceptual framework that depicts and guides trust-based interaction of collaborating partners. The third step comprises developing the TrustMech concept, validating it in both the conceptual and operational aspects, and demonstrating its application by carrying out controlled (simulation) experiments in Multi-Agent Systems. In particular, the proposed TrustMech concept characterizes fundamental logical processes that account for trusting decisions, actions, and reactions of collaborating partners to reinforce emergent trusting outcomes The core contributions of this dissertation are the general-purpose TrustMech and the operational TrustMech. The operational TrustMech is customary for collaborative sharing of logistics resources. Regarding its application, the operational TrustMech provides logistics managers and stakeholders the ability to forecast how a configured network of sharing may, in respect of trustworthiness, function upon its implementation. To clarify further, the operational TrustMech scrutinizes many issues. For example, it scrutinizes trustworthiness of the configured network regarding possible strengths and pitfalls and provides pathway explanations underlying such foreseen strengths and pitfalls. Secondly, the operational TrustMech scrutinizes effects which such strengths and pitfalls can generate. Moreover, the operational TrustMech estimates an extent to which behavioral factors influence the trustworthiness of the individual partner and entire resource sharing network. Future research works include extending the TrustMech and replicating the study using system data. Additional future work consists of adjusting the design and settings used, as well as incorporating additional predictor and response variables into the operational TrustMech.Dissertation846 367 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, A Methodological Concept for Supporting the Commercialization of Electric Vehicles towards Sustainable Urban Freight Transport(2019-03-04); ; ; Employment of Electric Commercial Vehicles (ECVs) constitutes a measure to achieve sustainable Urban Freight Transport (UFT). Despite a need for ECVs, the commercialization of ECVs in UFT has remained relatively low, which is reflected in the low market penetration. To increase the market penetration, much attention has been paid to four areas, which are the feasibility of ECVs, adaptions of logistics concepts, adaptions of vehicle concepts, and support of stakeholders. Besides studying these four areas, obtaining a satisfactory match between characteristics of ECVs and preferences of UFT is also an area for increasing the market penetration. However, due to the shortage of academic studies and appropriate tools that can systematically guide decision-makers in UFT to obtain a satisfactory match, little attention has been paid to this area. The present dissertation proposed a methodological concept, namely Sustainable ECV-UFT Matching Concept, to deal with the outlined problem. This concept comprises two methodologies (methodology of assessment and methodology of determination). Since matching up the ECVs and UFT generates many possibilities (denoted as ECV-UFT combinations), the methodology of assessment was developed to help decision-makers to assess the diverse ECV-UFT combinations quantitatively in the economic, social, and environmental perspective. Subsequently, the methodology of determination was developed to analyze the assessment results and support decision-makers in determining the satisfactory match from the many possibilities. In addition, this dissertation implemented this methodological concept by designing a simulation platform, which includes an available database and corresponding mathematical expressions. Three scenarios (DCV-, BEV-, and HEV-Express/post) were applied in the simulation platform to analyze the proposed methodological concept. The results confirmed that the Sustainable ECV-UFT Matching Concept is feasible in supporting decision-makers to determine the satisfactory match from the many ECV-UFT combinations. The benefits of obtaining a satisfactory match may inspire corresponding decision-makers to consider the employment of the appropriate ECVs in their UFT markets. This consideration may subsequently facilitate the market penetration of ECVs to achieve sustainable UFT. Overall, the main contribution of this dissertation is the development of a methodological concept to support the commercialization of ECVs for achieving sustainable UFT.Dissertation726 321 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Gestaltung von Innovationsprozessen in Virtuellen Organisationen durch Kooperationsorientierte NetzwerkanalyseDistributed innovation processes are considered as a new option to handle both the complexity and the speed in which new products and services need to be prepared. Indeed most research on innovation processes was focused on multinational companies with an intra-organisational perspective. The phenomena of innovation processes in networks - with an inter-organisational perspective - have been almost neglected. Collaborative networks present a perfect playground for such distributed innovation processes whereas the authors highlight in specific Virtual Organisation because of their dynamic behaviour. Research activities supporting distributed innovation processes in VO are rather new so that little knowledge about the management of such research is available. With the presentation of the collaborative network relationship analysis this gap will be addressed. It will be shown that a qualitative planning of collaboration intensities can support real business cases by proving knowledge and planning data.Dissertation433 325 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Understanding and fulfilling information needs of stakeholders along product lifecycles: Applying data analytics in product life-cycle managementImproving the management of product lifecycle is becoming increasingly important today. The concept of Closed Loop Product Lifecycle Management (CL-PLM) has been developed to help organizations in the value chain to promote the comprehensive management of product lifecycle information and activities. CL-PLM attempts to manage all processes related to products, from product design to end of product life. However, the development of this concept is not still complete. There is a need for more research to manage the data and information flows and to provide each organization in the value chain with the right data from product Middle Of the Life (MOL). In this thesis, a new approach is presented, which completes the concept of CL-PLM in terms of information requirements of product beneficiaries in MOL of the product. The research question is as follows: Which groups and organizations use the products or are affected by it and can be benefited from the product's operational information? The research involves the determination of the information needs of the stakeholders and tests the automatic provision of information to stakeholder organizations (beneficiaries) using data analytics methods. The methodology used in this thesis is an inductive approach. To this end, two case studies on engineered products are carried out. Based on these two studies, the stakeholders involved in MOL, which benefit from the product and its information, are identified. Next, the dissertation identifies current and future information needs. Interviews and surveys have been used to identify information that MOL stakeholders need. The second part of this thesis examines, which data analytics methods can be useful for supporting each information need. After the completion of analysis, the findings are tested and implemented in real-world scenarios. The scenarios show how these information requirements can be satisfied with data analytics. The findings of this research are various. First is to find out the MOL stakeholders of the product lifecycle and grouping the most influential ones, which are affected by product MOL data and information. Moreover, identifying their current and potential future information needs from the product MOL. Second is a classification of data analytics tools (suggestions on suitable tools) that can help the stakeholders to meet their new information needs from the product, or improve their access to product MOL information. The third part of the results is the implementation of the mentioned concept in three scenarios. In implementation part, information needs of OEM about the performance of a component in an electric vehicle, information need of maintenance provider from motorboat in respect of spare part supply and information need of wind farm operator from windmills for contact design are selected and modeled. The latter shows that it is possible to automatize the provision of the required information to the stakeholders. These three contributions form the output of this dissertation. In sum, the findings of this thesis can be helpful for product and service manufacturers, especially those who want to move from pure production to the production of a product with the services, and organizations, who wish to add intelligence to their products. This research can also be useful for PLM software developers. Finally, it is helpful for all companies involved in the realization of engineered products that want to understand and manage the lifecycle of the product.Dissertation920 383 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Manufacturing Industry Supply Chain Modeling and Improvement in Developing CountriesManufacturing industries are in dynamic changes in both developed and developing countries. It has increasingly been argued in the literature that for a company which strives for market competitiveness, it does not suffice just to excel at managing company s assets. Indeed, it has been suggested that supply chains compete, not companies (Lambert and Cooper, 2000). To this effect supply chain modeling and improvement is gaining more and more attention from academics and practitioners. With the recent emphasis by businesses around the world on the division of tasks, more and more activities are being outsourced to manufacturing firms in developing economies. Being the source of primary raw material, the performance of firms in developing countries is expected to contribute to the improvement of the entire supply chain. It is, therefore, important to seek a business process oriented model that facilitates their modeling and improvement efforts. The need for such model is augmented after considering a recent trend of global supply chain integration of firms. The motivation for this thesis is an interest to improve the supply chain processes that involves developing countries associated with the developed countries firms in production activities. Currently, different supply chain models have been developed that enable firms to model, evaluate, and improve supply chain activities. Among all the models, the most promising for supply chain modeling and improvement is the supply chain operations reference (SCOR) model. However, this approach is tailored to the needs of western, developed industries. Particularly, the early processes and products situated in the developing countries have totally different conditions and constraints. In consequence, these early processes in the supply chain have not been considered in the model. Many cross-cultural studies provide evidence that because of the existing business practices and operating environment differences, models in one country need to be adapted for effective use in another. This research work seeks to investigate the current characteristics of supply chains that support adaptation works. The research utilized a two-phase, mixed methods research design supported by literature review. After thoroughly understanding the characteristics of the supply chain, the research adapted the SCOR model that suits the situations of firms in developing countries. The main contribution of this research is an adapted business process with appropriate building blocks for an adapted SCOR model for firms in developing countries. Then, the proposed model has been implemented as a case study in a leather and leather products industry. Future practical implementation and application of the adapted SCOR model in situations of different manufacturing industries in developing country would allow for analyzing and possibly quantifying the benefits of the model.Dissertation660 319 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
