Item type:Publication, Rapid Prototyping Infrastructure for Wearable Computing Applications(2015-06-19); ; ; This thesis deals with the implementation of a framework to build context-sensitive wearable computing applications that enables a rapid-prototyping approach during development. Special technical demands for such a framework in an industrial setting are worked out and an abstraction for modelling information in the environment is introduced. An existing framework for context-aware applications in a pervasive computing environment is examined where problems arise when transferring it to the wearable computing domain. This motivates a specialized approach customized to the conditions in an industrial environment. As a last point an evaluation of the framework by its use in the development of a wearable computing solution is performed leading to a final assessment of its value.doctoral thesis437 147 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Development and Evaluation of AI-based Parkinson's Disease Related Motor Symptom Detection Algorithms(2015-07-06); ; ; Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a chronic, progressive, neurodegenerative disorder that is typically characterized by a loss of (motor) function, increased slowness and rigidity. Due to a lack of feasible biomarkers, progression cannot easily be quantified with objective measures. For the same reason, neurologists have to revert to monitoring of (motor) symptoms (i.e. by means of subjective and often inaccurate patient diaries) in order to evaluate a medication's effectiveness. Replacing or supplementing these diaries with an automatic and objective assessment of symptoms and side effects could drastically reduce manual efforts and potentially help in personalizing and improving medication regime. In turn, appearance of symptoms could be reduced and the patient's quality of life increased. The objective of this thesis is two-fold: (1) development and improvement of algorithms for detecting PD related motor symptoms and (2) to develop a software framework for time series analysis.doctoral thesis689 375 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, An ontology-based approach to achieve inclusive design support in the early phases of the product development process(2014-02-11); ; ; In recent years more and more sophisticated devices are created including an, in the "worst" case, exponential growth of functionality: In current versions mobile phones are not just telecommunication devices, but also a camera, music player, browser, email interface etc., resulting in new terms like smart phones. A television device can also be used as a browser using a wireless internet connection and washing machines contain more programmable functions than customers will ever need and use. This complexity can most often be reflected as a burden for the users regarding the necessity to learn how to use such a product. Accordingly, one main challenge - and opportunity - of human computer interaction is the involvement of each functionality in a respective and selfdescriptive way to the user. On the other hand, especially due to demographic changes, user requirements must also be considered in the design process. Existing guidelines and standards define approaches and recommendations regarding design issues related to different devices and user impairments, but are not consequently included in product development. Designers have the challenge to respect both topics and create either individual products or products for an as wide spread customer group of people as possible.doctoral thesis302 178 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Personal State and Emotion Monitoring by Wearable Computing and Machine Learning(2017-07-03); ; ; One of the major scientific undertakings over the past few years has been exploring the interaction between humans and machines in mobile environments. Wearable computers, embedded in clothing or seamlessly integrated into everyday devices, have an incredible advantage to become the main gateway to personal health management. Current state of the art devices are capable in monitoring basic physical or physiological parameters. Traditional health systems procedures depend on the physical presence of the patient and a medical specialist that not only is a reason of overall costs but also reduces the quality of patients' lives, particularly elderly patients. Usually, patients have to go through the following steps for the traditional procedure: Firstly, patients need to visit the clinic, get registered at reception, wait for the turn, go to the lab for the physiological measurement, wait for the medical experts call, to finally receive feedback from the medical expert. In this work, we examined how to utilize existing technology in order to develop an e-health monitoring system especially for heart patients. This system should support the interaction between the patient and the physician even when the patient is not in the clinic. The supporting wearable health monitoring system WHMS should recognize physical activities, emotional states and transmit this information to the physician along with relevant physiological data; in this way patients do not need to visit the clinic every time for the physician's feed-back. After the discussion with medical experts, we identified relevant physical activities, emotional states and physiological data needed for the patients' examinations. A prototype of this concept for a health monitoring system of the proposed solution was implemented taking into account physical activities, emotional states and physiological data.doctoral thesis640 403
