Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Self Adaptive Communication based on Soil Moisture for Wireless Underground Sensor Networks(2020-05-19); In wireless underground sensor networks, channel estimation for communication success requires absolute information about deployment and properties of soil. These properties include soil composition (sand, silt, clay), soil density, soil temperature, inter-node distance, node depth, operating frequency and soil moisture. However, only soil moisture shows most temporal and spatial variation and affects the underground communication in long term. Therefore, we propose only soil moisture based self adaptive communication approach that overcomes the requirement of precise knowledge about the parameters of soil and underground deployment. This approach strives to find the maximum soil moisture threshold for successful communication for any given deployment. And, the sensor nodes conserve energy by avoiding the communication in times of increased soil moisture. Our proposed method is proved to be 5 times more energy efficient than terrestrial medium access control methods i.e.\ B-MAC for underground monitoring applications under extreme weather conditions.% One such application requires to analyse the efficiency of reforestation techniques to combat desertification of large fields in Cameroon. However persistent rains in the region present communication and reduced battery life challenges for underground networks. Self adaptive approach allows the sensor nodes to conserve more energy by forbidding the communication in times of increased soil moisture without requiring any soil information.Bericht445 440 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Measuring the external exposome with the internet of things: A technical perspective(2025-11-25) ;Munasingha, Thamali ;Kimutai, Gibson ;Steiwer, JuliaPublic health is increasingly influenced by environmental exposures that affect human well-being. The concept of the external exposome, the totality of environmental exposures an individual experiences throughout life, has emerged as a critical framework in this context. This paper presents a comprehensive and accessible technical overview of how the Internet of Things (IoT) can monitor the external exposome and support public health initiatives. Focusing on air, water, and land-based environmental parameters, we provide a tutorial-style introduction tailored to public health and medical researchers with limited engineering backgrounds. Our discussion covers key IoT building blocks, including sensor types, communication protocols, power management strategies, and data analytics, emphasizing their practical application in indoor and outdoor environments. We review real-world IoT deployments across domains such as air quality monitoring, radiation detection, extreme weather surveillance, and biological pollutant tracking, highlighting technical challenges and societal benefits. To support practical adoption, we introduce implementation templates that consider trade-offs among power consumption, data volume, and connectivity, offering actionable guidance for non-specialist users. This paper bridges disciplinary divides and encourages interdisciplinary collaboration in exposome research by integrating technological foundations with public health goals. We illustrate how IoT-enabled, real-time, and context-aware sensing systems can play a transformative role in advancing environmental public health.Wissenschaftlicher Artikel123 59 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Exciting Students for Systems Programming Through the Use of Mobile Robots; ;Förster, AlexanderLeitner, JürgenIn this paper we present our experience teaching Systems Program- ming in C to undergraduate students. Additionally to traditional Unix-like operating system approach, we employed a robotic plat- form - the e-puck mobile robot - to increase the students moti- vation and improve their learning experience. A robotic platform provides high attraction for students, making the class stand-out compared to other courses. Yet it is not only a playground, rather, the platform allows to present very challenging and sophisticated real-life programming problems in a tangible way. The chosen robot provides an open-source operating system with a well struc- tured programming interface and thus o ers a real-world, complex example of systems programming to the students. We describe the overall curriculum and the syllabus of the course itself. Emphasis is put on the design of the in-class and homework assignments, but the robotic platform is brie y described as well. Our success is con rmed by the end-of-semester evaluation by the students, who ranked our course among the top of all bachelor-level courses.Bericht274 87
