Yet there is general consensus that Gerhard Rühm is a "master of boundary-crossing". The present work analyzes intermedia aspects in the artist's musical and literary, as well as artistic production. After an introduction outlining Gerhard Rühm's artistic development, it will set forth the theoretical framework for a definition of intermediality. Subsequently, a total of 26 works will be analyzed with respect to their intermedia aspects. By dividing the examples of work into three groups, those fluctuating between poetry and music, between fine art and music, and between fine art and poetry, an exemplary insight will be provided into almost every field of the artist's productivity. In addition, this thesis will present a selection of constantly recurring, overarching themes in Gerhard Rühm's creative work. |
