Abstract:
The thesis is to be seen in the context of the current quality discussion of the work with the handicapped. In this debate, besides economical tendencies, self-determination of the mentally handicapped is defined as a crucial criterion of quality by the experts as well as the respective persons themselves. The subjective appreciations of the handicapped person themselves with respect to their chances of self- determination are given priority, although economical considerations require to put the personal situation of the ´cients´ in the centre of attention in order to make sufficient use of the financial resources. The purpose of this thesis is to work out the degree of agreement between the standards as laid down by the R.W.d.I.M. and the subjective experiences of the inmates of this institution for the handicapped. The investigations were made within the framework of ascertaining quality results of the institution´s quality system. It was carried out by the methods of qualitative interviews following a guiding pattern. First the term self-determination was precisely defined and made operational, then the criteria for the categories ´autonomy´, ´independence´ and ´competence´ were laid down. Questions based on these criteria were aligned with eight dimensions. The results of the questioning were evaluated following the content analysis according to P. Mayring. Tendencies resulting from the experiences with self-determination were contasted with the standard as laid down by the R.W.d.I.M. The degree of agreement led to conclusions concerning the satisfaction of the institution´s members. In addition, a second method-participation observation- was applied to make visible the inmates´degree of competence and to support the validity of the investigation. The results were listed in a table and discussed with relevance to the current quality debate.
