Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Statistical analysis methods for functional magnetic resonance imaging data(2026-09-07) ;Preusse, Friederike; ; One aim of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is to locate activity in the brain. To this end, time series related to brain activity are observed at multiple voxels and inference on the brain activity is made simultaneously for all voxels. Thus, the statistical analysis pipeline of fMRI data includes time series analysis methods and simultaneous inference procedures. Two common assumptions in the analysis of fMRI data are that the hemodynamic response (the brain’s reaction to a certain stimulus) does not change over time and that data acquisition follows a fixed sampling regiment. This thesis aims to contribute to the statistical methodologies applicable to fMRI data. In total, four novel procedures are proposed. The first two procedures make inference on sudden changes in the hemodynamic response in multiple brain regions simultaneously and thus do not rely on the assumption of time invariance of the hemodynamic response. One of the procedures requires knowledge regarding the location of the change points. It enables the practitioner to make inference on changes in multiple shape characteristics of the hemodynamic response. In the other procedure, the change point locations are estimated based on the observed data. The novel statistical concept of the post-selection variance is proposed to account for using the same data to determine the change point locations and to make inference on the existence of the change points. The third and fourth proposed methods are multiple comparison procedures to compute lower confidence bounds for the proportion of false hypotheses in a set of null hypotheses. Applied to fMRI data, the proposed approaches determine the proportion of truly active voxels in a brain region. Specifically, if the set of null hypotheses of interest is specified a-priori, the third proposed method utilizes the exact distribution of the number of rejections of a step-up test to compute the confidence bounds. Lastly, confidence bounds that are valid at any observation time point and that are valid simultaneously for all possible subsets of the considered null hypotheses are proposed. This allows for a flexible sampling regiment and determination of rejection sets based on the observed confidence bounds.Dissertation29 7 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, EEG-based Auditory Attention Tracking in Dynamic Multi-Talker Scenes(2026-08-14); ; ;Nakamura, Satoshi ;Li, HaizhouHumans can selectively attend to one speaker in the presence of competing voices and background noise, a phenomenon known as the cocktail-party effect (Cherry, 1953; Bronkhorst, 2000). Translating this ability into assistive listening technology remains difficult because an audio device must infer which source the listener intends to follow, often under short decision windows, multiple competing talkers, reduced sensor layouts, and changing spatial configurations (O’Sullivan et al., 2015; Van Eyndhoven et al., 2017). EEG-based Auditory Attention Decoding (AAD) addresses this problem by estimating the listener’s attentional focus from neural activity and is therefore an important research direction for future neuro-steered listening systems (Crosse et al., 2016; Ciccarelli et al., 2019; Geirnaert, Vandecappelle, et al., 2021). In this dissertation, such systems are treated as the motivating application context. The work develops EEG-based attention decoding and tracking methods, but it does not claim a clinically validated hearing-aid system, an embedded commercial hearable prototype, or validation with hearing-impaired users wearing hearing devices. The scientific problem underlying this dissertation is how to move EEG-based AAD from controlled proof-of-concept settings toward deployment-relevant research conditions. Prior work has reported promising results, yet many studies still rely on relatively static scenes, permissive window-level evaluation, subject-specific calibration, scalp-mounted sensors, or discrete attended-speaker labels (Ivucic, Pahuja, et al., 2024; Debener et al., 2015; Bednar and Lalor, 2020). Practical neuro-steered listening research requires a broader formulation: decoders should work with short windows without overstating real-time performance, should be evaluated under leakage-controlled trial- and subject-independent protocols, should remain robust when sensor layouts are reduced toward ear-centered recordings, and should extend from static speaker selection to continuous tracking of attended spatial trajectories. This cumulative dissertation addresses this problem through five connected research directions. First, it investigates short-window and reduced-montage binary AAD (bAAD) using cross-hemispheric attention in XAnet (Pahuja et al., 2023a). Second, it studies leakage-controlled evaluation for windowed EEG decoding and shows that cross-validation and segmentation choices can bias reported AAD performance when temporal dependence is not respected (Ivucic, Pahuja, et al., 2024; Pahuja et al., 2024). Third, it improves subject-independent AAD through physiologically motivated data augmentation and geometry-aware graph modeling (Pahuja et al., 2023b; Ivucic, Pahuja, et al., 2025). Fourth, it extends AAD to wearable multi-talker decoding (mAAD) with ear-EEG, where graph and cross-attention models capture intra-ear and inter-ear structure, and where DemoSAA demonstrates how four-speaker ear-EEG decoding can be organized in an interactive research pipeline (Pahuja et al., 2025c; Pahuja et al., 2025a). Fifth, it reframes AAD in moving-speaker scenes as tracking AAD (tAAD), where the target is not only a discrete attended talker but a time-varying attended azimuth trajectory estimated under causal and leakage-controlled conditions (Pahuja et al., 2025d; Pahuja et al., 2025b). Together, the results show that progress in EEG-based AAD depends on the joint design of model architecture, sensing strategy, task formulation, and evaluation protocol. Cross-attention and graph-based inductive bias improve short-window robustness; blocked evaluation gives more credible estimates of trial and subject transfer; augmentation and geometry-aware learning reduce subject-transfer degradation; ear-EEG can support multi-class attention decoding despite sparse sensing; and temporal tracking models enable reconstruction of attended spatial trajectories from EEG in dynamic scenes. The overall contribution is a dissertation-level argument that reliable neuro-steered listening research cannot emerge from stronger neural networks alone, but requires structured modeling combined with leakage-free, deployment-aware evaluation.Dissertation26 3 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Betriebliches Kompetenzmanagement älterer Beschäftigter in digitalisierten Lernumwelten (BeKomIng Digital). Bericht13 2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Trends in the use of thyroid diagnostics and treatment in Germany: analyses based on the German Pharmacoepidemiological Research Database(2026-09-08); ; ; Thyroid disorders are common in Germany due to the low natural occurrence of iodine in the soil. Besides the environmental factor, Germany’s reunification history and the subsequent health-policy changes on the prevention of thyroid disorders have also influenced the prevalence of thyroid disorders. This, in turn, may have impacted on the corresponding use of thyroid diagnostics and treatments. However, data (particularly population-based data) in these areas remain extremely limited. Therefore, using data from the so-called German Pharmacoepidemiological Research Database (GePaRD), which covers approximately 20% of the German population, this dissertation examines the trends in the use of thyroid diagnostics and treatments in Germany. Specifically, it estimates the annual prevalence of thyroid diagnostics and treatments, investigates the regional differences in the use of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) measurement and levothyroxine, and describes the epidemiology of thyroid storm (a rare and life-threatening thyroid disorder) in Germany. Findings from this dissertation suggest a continued decline in the prevalence of clinically significant thyroid disorders in Germany between 2008 and 2019, potentially reflecting the long-term effectiveness of an iodine fortification program that was implemented since 1993. Furthermore, the marked increase and substantial regional variations in TSH measurement and levothyroxine use support the hypothesis of overdiagnosis and overtreatment. These patterns are unlikely to be explained by regional differences in the prevalence of clinically significant thyroid disorders, warranting further investigation.Dissertation32 3 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Uncovering the colonial legacy: An analytical framework for examining the long-term effects of colonialism on social policy(2026)Research on the long-term impact of colonial rule on social policy remains limited, despite growing evidence that colonial legacies continue to influence welfare arrangements in former colonies in significant and often adverse ways. Existing scholarship is highly fragmented, weakly interconnected, and frequently lacks clearly articulated causal arguments about colonial legacies. These shortcomings constrain scholars, policymakers, and practitioners in international cooperation in explaining variation in welfare outcomes and in designing context-sensitive, equitable interventions. To address these limitations, this article develops the Colonial Legacies in Social Policy (CLSP) Framework as a theoretical contribution to the study of colonialism’s long-term effects on social policy. Building on a critical review of existing approaches, the framework integrates fragmented causal arguments into a coherent analytical structure that distinguishes between colonial causes, the causal mechanisms linking these causes to their effects, and institutional and distributive outcomes. Critically assessing the causal claims in the extant literature and contrasting them with insights from the broader scholarship on colonialism also identifies key shortcomings, including theoretically imprecise explanations, weak specification of causal mechanisms, and insufficient attention to the interactions among different forms of colonial intervention. The framework provides a structured entry point and a common conceptual language for future research seeking to overcome these limitations. It strengthens causal clarity, supports more systematic comparison across cases, and facilitates more rigorous empirical strategies, including mechanism-based analysis and improved variable specification. More broadly, it advances the study of colonial legacies toward a more theoretically grounded and causally explicit research agenda in social policy.BerichtBand:3436 11 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, What Was I Thinking? A Framework and Survey of Metacognitive Experience Memory in Cognitive Architectures(2026-09-08); ; ; For many modern Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems, it is nearly impossible to understand how specific outputs arise from given inputs. This includes Large Language Models (LLMs), which can generate plausible-sounding explanations of their own processes; initial case studies, however, cast doubt on the faithfulness of these explanations, suggesting that they do not necessarily reflect the underlying processing that actually produced the output. Even post-hoc Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) methods usually show only which inputs were influential, not how a model used them to arrive at a result. This lack of transparency gives rise to a range of problems, including severe limitations in epistemological insight, security guarantees, calibrated user trust, human oversight, debuggability, and meaningful autonomy. In contrast, human cognition is transparent in that it is aware of its own processes through metacognitive experiences and can usually report them reliably. From a biomimetic perspective, this raises the question of how AI systems might exploit metacognitive experiences, not least in order to increase their transparency. Research on metacognition in AI, however, has so far remained a highly fragmented field: divergent theories, terminologies, and design principles have led to disjointed developments and severely limited comparability across relevant approaches. A principled account of metacognitive experiences is still very much missing. This cumulative dissertation addresses that gap by examining the metacognitive experiences of an established class of AI systems specifically designed to model human cognition: Computational Cognitive Architectures (CCAs). It does so in three steps: first, a systematic review synthesises three decades of research on how existing CCAs model metacognitive experiences, store them in episodic memory, and later utilise them. Second, drawing on these principles, this thesis proposes a standardised vocabulary and representational schema for metacognitive experiences in the form of the operational ontology MOI. Third, it explores how CCAs could reason about such representations — which requires both database queries and characterisations of abnormal cognition — by establishing the decidability and complexity of a range of expressive description logics with circumscription. Taken together, the three methodologically diverse studies contribute a coherent framework for metacognitive experiences in CCAs spanning empirical, representational and computational aspects. Specifically, they provide concrete recommendations on how future CCA research should proceed and how metacognition could be investigated as a potentially emergent property in opaque systems such as LLMs. In this way, the thesis contributes to the development of more transparent AI systems in the future, as well as to the disciplines of logic, cognitive science, and robotics.Dissertation26 15 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Microstructure evolution during laser directed energy deposition of a hardenable tool steel(2026-06-16); ; ;Niendorf, ThomasThis work used in situ high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction (HEXRD) at the P07-EH3 beamline at DESY-Petra III to investigate microstructural evolution in X40CrMoV5-1 tool steel during laser-based directed energy deposition (DED-LB/M) of thin walls. The synchrotron beam was fixed at five wall-height positions (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%), and diffraction data were processed with PyFAI and refined via a custom Rietveld script in TOPAS-Academic V6, alongside additional dilatometric HEXRD experiments to improve the estimation of temperature based on the lattice parameter of the main phases. Results show peak temperatures exceeding 1400 °C near the deposition zone, with solidification rates up to 2000 K/s, followed by martensitic transformation. Thermal accumulation increased with wall height, altering heat treatment (IHT) and creating a heterogeneous microstructure. IHT was decomposed into five cycles: full melting, partial melting, austenitization, partial austenitization, and tempering. Rietveld analysis revealed high dislocation density and martensite tetragonality early in the process, decreasing with heat accumulation (auto-tempering). Repeated austenitizing cycles caused dislocation accumulation in austenite. Metallographic characterization (optical/electron microscopy, microhardness, EBSD, EPMA) showed light tempering at the bottom, severe tempering mid-height, and quenched martensite at the top, with a hardness transition between 50–75%. APT and TEM identified carbide/carbonitride precipitation: V-rich MC/MCN formed during partial melting cycles, with MC dissolving during austenitization while MCN persisted. V-rich M8C7 and Fe-Cr-rich M3C/M7C3 formed during partial austenitizing and tempering cycles, respectively. Tempering severity affected precipitate distribution/composition rather than total phase fraction, with less-tempered regions showing more Fe-rich, non-equilibrium carbide compositions. The work establishes a methodology for tracking fast phase transformations, temperature, lattice defects, and precipitation behavior in tool steel during AM, providing a knowledge base for future processability, simulation, and synchrotron studies.Dissertation8 5 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Bericht27 13 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
