Item type:Publication, Konzeption und Durchführung einer Katamnese-Studie im Jugendhilfebereich(2011-04-14); ; ; Effectiveness of day care youth welfare measures Objective: In order to provide optimal support to families living in precarious circumstances, empirically sound findings on the adequacy of the educational-therapeutic concepts that are being implemented in the context of these measures are required. Our study investigates to what extent service-users benefit from youth welfare measures between the measures between start and finish. Method: Altogether, 50 adolescents have participated in educational measures for a period of two years on average. Problem areas constituting an indication for an educational measure were assessed systematically at the beginning and after termination of the measure (pre-post-comparison). Results: The primary goals of day care in particular were clearly reached. Compared to their level at the beginning of the measure, problems concerning social behaviour had clearly improved at the measure s termination. Further, school achievement problems were clearly reduced during the educational measure. In cooperation with the parents it was possible to significantly reduce deficits in parenting skills inherent in the family system. Conclusions: Results underscore the high effectiveness of educational measures in reducing strain and problem behaviour.doctoral thesis587 596 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Emotionsregulation im Kindes- und Jugendalter: Konzeptdefinition, entwicklungsspezifische Diagnostik und Psychopathologie(2013-08-13); ; ; The aim of this doctoral thesis was to consider emotion regulation (ER) with a developmental perspective and to examine ER in internalizing disorders. An own definition provided a basis for further analyses (study I). A systematic review showed that ER diagnoses are more satisfactory in late childhood compared to infancy or toddlerhood (study II). Literature revealed limited findings for the relationship between ER and internalizing disorders (study III). Study IV examined ER as a mechanism in the relation between attachment and depression in 248 adolescents. Results showed gender-specific mediation by dysfunctional ER. Refinements of conceptual models can be derived. Study V compared matched samples of adolescents with anxiety disorders(n = 20), depression (n = 20) or without mental disorders (n = 20) in their ER. Anxious and depressive adolescents showed more dysfunctional ER than their healthy peers. Dysfunctional ER marks a transdiagnostic factor of internalizing disorders.doctoral thesis1691 4814 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Einfluss emotionaler und sozial-kognitiver Prozesse auf das aggressive Verhalten bei Kindern im Kindergartenalter(2011-04-14); ; ; This cumulative dissertation focuses on the influence of emotional and social-cognitive processes on aggressive behavior in a sample of 193 preschool-aged children. Data on emotion regulation, social information processing (SIP), and aggressive behavior has been assessed using different methods (teacher report, structured observation, and child interview). Study I (Helmsen&Petermann, 2010a) showed that physically aggressive children exhibited deficits in almost every step of SIP. Relationally aggressive children did not show any biases in SIP. Study II (Helmsen&Petermann, 2010b) showed that physically aggressive children focused their attention on frustrating stimulus and used venting and cognitive verbalization more often than non-physically aggressive children. Relationally aggressive children used venting more often than non-relationally aggressive children. Study III (Helmsen, Koglin&Petermann, 2010) revealed that the relation between maladaptive emotion regulation and aggression was direct and not mediated by SIP biases.doctoral thesis1270 896 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
The dissertation presented first focuses on diagnostical aspects of childrens behaviour problems. Subsequently, behavior problems of children with a background of migration and behaviour problems of native German children were compared. Quality of life (QoL) in children has emerged as an important concept to optimate prevention and intervention measures. Therefore, the present study examined the QoL of preschool aged children with and without a background of migration. Furthermore, QoL was compared for four groups and their mothers: Children with developmental delay, children with behavior problems, children with developmental delay and behavior problems, as well as a healthy control group. Finally, the paper investigated whether the pro-social behaviour of these children as well as their possible behaviour problems were associated with maternal parenting behaviour and if gender and migration status have an influence on maternal parenting practices.doctoral thesis1066 614 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Selbstverletzendes Verhalten in derklinischen Diagnostik - Erfassung des Phänomens durch den kategorialen, funktionalistischen und dimensionalen Ansatz(2009-10-28); ; ; Goal of this dissertation was to demonstrate, if the three global models of psychological assessment (categorical, dimensional, and functionalistic) can be applied to measure non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) without restrictions. To validate the models, empirical studies have to support the underlying assumptions of each model concerning the nature of the assessment object. The classification model, adjusted to NSSI, assumes that the phenomenon can be understood and conceptualized as a nosological entity. The dimensional model presumed that NSSI (as well as suicide attempts) can be described as a cluster of certain range of values on features characteristic of direct self-harm behaviour. According to the functionalistic model, NSSI is a dysfunctional coping behaviour and can be explained by learn and cognitive theory. Literature research and reanalysis of data confirmed all postulates of each assessment model. Following, three specific approaches to measure NSSI were derived and presented. Furthermore, it was pointed out that psychometric instruments are available, which assess NSSI in accordance with model specifications.doctoral thesis488 711 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Überprüfung der Wirksamkeit des "Trainings mit sozial unsicheren Kindern"(2014-02-28); ; ; The aim of the present study was to evaluate the "Training mit sozial unsicheren Kindern" (Petermann&Petermann, 2006), a cognitive-behavioral treatment program developed for children aged 7 to 12 years suffering from (social) anxiety disorders. The effectiveness of the treatment program was examined with a (wait-list) control group design. The sample consisted of 25 children (13 girls, 12 boys) aged 7 to 12 years who met the ICD-10 diagnostic criteria for an anxiety disorder. The children were randomly assigned to either a treatment (n = 14) or a (wait-list) control group (n = 11). In both conditions social anxiety was assessed by self-, parent- and teacher-report measures before, immediately after and six months after treatment. Comorbid depression and social functioning in school were assessed with further questionnaires. The results of the present study indicate the short- and long-term effectiveness of the treatment program. The parents' report showed a significant reduction of (social) anxiety symptoms after treatment in the treatment group compared to the (wait-list) control group. Furthermore, according to parents' report the treatment group also had lower levels of depressive symptoms at posttreatment, but this pre-post-difference did not exceed the changes in the (wait-list) control group. The parent-reported treatment gains in anxiety and depressive symptoms were maintained at six-month follow-up. According to children's and teachers' ratings the children experienced reduction in anxiety symptoms and improvement in social functioning in school not until six-month follow-up. Sociodemographic variables (gender, age and intelligence) and clinical status (comorbid depression) were not found to be directly related to treatment outcome. The agreement between multiple informants' ratings on children's psychopathology was only low.doctoral thesis636 1380 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Die Aufmerksamkeitsdefizit-/Hyperaktivitätsstörung: Eine neuropsychologische Perspektive mit neuen Ansätzen für Diagnostik und Therapie(2011-06-24); ; ; Recent models about the etiopathogenesis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) postulate executive function deficits and motivational dysfunctions as the essential neuropsychological constituents in affected patients. Measures based on PASS processes to assess the cognitive and executive deficits specific to ADHD are basically being applied in the English language area. PASS theory has been shown to be sensitive to the specific cognitive problems and executive deficits of children with ADHD by assessing the following dynamic cognitive processes: planning, attention, simultaneous and successive processing. The thesis describes the neuropsychological fundamentals of ADHD and presents corresponding diagnostic measures. The role of current measures based on PASS theory in regard to the diagnostic process and resulting implications for clinical every day life are being discussed. It is also discussed whether fundamental learning theory-based techniques lead to substantial improvements in neuropsychological functioning of children with ADHD.doctoral thesis602 1116 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Risikofaktoren der Höhe und Stabilität von kindlicher Intelligenz im Übergang zur Schule - eine entwicklungspsychologische Sichtweise(2008-05-27); ; ; IQ is one of the best analysed and most stable personality traits. However, few studies have analyses IQ from a developmental psychology perspective. It is well known that a child's IQ is one of the best predictors for later school achievement. Levels of individual intelligence achievements are affected decisively by biological and psychosocial risks. It is as yet not sufficiently documented, whether variance in risk factors affects IQ level and stability of intelligence achievements. This study analyses the effect total number and variability of psychosocial risk factors exert on level and stability of intelligence from a developmental psychology perspective. Furthermore it examines the effects of risk factors and IQ on completion of school and social developmental tasks in first class. The sample consisted of N=120 children (66 girls, 54 boys) aged M=6.1 years (SD=.41), who were tested twice for IQ and risks over a period of one year. Results show a significant inverse effect of risk number on children's intelligence achievements. In sum, stability of IQ was demonstrated. In association with defined variable risk factors, a decrease in total number of risks over time resulted in higher IQs. It was shown that IQ level is important for both, school and social developmental tasks. After examination of IQ, age and sex, risk number was only relevant for the completion of social tasks.doctoral thesis638 310
