Abstract:
This qualitative research focuses on the different factors influencing ethnic minority students to study nursing at a college in Amsterdam and to finish successfully. Narrative interviews, persistent observation and groups discussion showed the strong influence of the students biographies on their nursing studies as well as the culture of the institute self, the Dutch educational system and the changing patients population in different health care settings. All these influences are embedded in the societal discussion on ethnic minorities and their integration or disintegration in the Netherlands. The minor-programme 'Global Nursing' as a facultative programme of 30 ECTS at the college offers 3rd year bachelor students as well as teachers the possibility to teach and learn in English and to gain more knowledge on certain influences on health, sickness and disease. The international classroom as a learning community - a students exchange programme is part of the minor programme - enables the involved to share their perspectives on certain topics and discuss them in a broader context. These methods change partly the students and teachers perceptions of ethnic minority students towards a more open and understanding attitude.
