Abstract
The dissertation gives a discription of the development of the Czech gymnastics (Sokol) in relation to the German gymnastics in the 19th and 20th century. The German gymnastics movement had a great impact on the the formation and development of the Czech Sokol. In the beginning Sokol adopted most of the features of the German gymnastics programme but later it developed its own concept. That led to numerous arguments between German and Czech gymnasts in Prague.
