All bearings failed from subsurface crack initiation. Additionally determined fatigue lives gained from compression torsion tests with round specimens could be correlated with the results of the rolling contact fatigue tests. Carbide strings resulting from primary carbides are locally concentrated in the core of the semi-finished material where the non-metallic inclusion content is also increased. Generally, carbide strings may have a negative influence on the fatigue life behaviour.
