The cultural industries as a research object in economic geography
Sectors whose products promote the development of individual preferences and goals or which serve as a source for personal entertainment or information have recently been grouped together under the heading of 'cultural industries'. The cultural industries have attracted increasing interest in the field of economic geography in recent years because of their positive growth rates and employment effects. Furthermore the cultural industries feature other favourable characteristics. These are the importance of creativity as a fundamental driving force for economic development, the flexibility of project based production networks as well as the globalized distribution networks of powerful transnational media and entertainment companies. Based on the detailed analysis of these characteristics, the aim of this paper is to suggest that the cultural industries are a valuable research object in the field of economic geography.
