Abstract:
A commonly used procedure to synthesize imidazolium-based ionic liquids or its precursors involves an alkylation step. During the course of these highly exothermic reactions two phase systems evolve which are likely to be affected by insufficient mixing and heat removal. Negative impacts on reaction rates, product quality and process safety may result when applying conventional reactor technology. In this work it is demonstrated that ionic liquids (sample substance: 1-Butyl-4-Methylimidazolium Bromide)can be sourced at highly increased space time yields and with excellent quality by using micro reactor technology.
