Zusammenfassung
The analysis is dedicated to the concept of characters within premodern literature related to small literary forms and their role in the narrative order within the framework of storytelling as an anthropological universal. The subject of consideration is Veit Warbeck’s Die schöne Magelone in the edition of the Buch der Liebe from 1587. In the context of narration as an anthropological universal, the conversations of the characters form a referential network below the schematic structure of the text, which emphasizes the action from a further narrative level in a way that constitutes meaning. The narratives generated from the character’s conversations can also be categorized in terms of specified genres as small literary forms that not only claim the potential to create meaning in the respective situational context, they also have action-motivating relevance for the entire narrative.
