Abstract:
The focus of this work is on a woman who contributed to modern German ecclesiastical welfare and social work history - Sister Eva von Tiele-Winckler (1866-1930), who is portrayed against the background of the contradictions and opportunities of her time, i.e. the time of Germany's industrialisation and its wide-reaching consequences, with an attempt made to explain and assess the contribution made by her. A number of different specialist approaches are used in order to do justice to the multifaceted personality of Sister Eva as the founder and leader of an ecclesiastical welfare establishment, head of an evangelical sisterhood, a replacement mother for homeless children, and a representative of the historic tradition of devout piousness. At the same time her life's work and personality are examined against the background of the time, which was one of prevailing change. Consideration is given to the question of whether this woman, living in a time of modernity but acting out of pre-modern potential, was displaying an attitude that is above the mainstream and current trends, and one that will stand the test of time, thereby providing a possible answer to the age-old question concerning the essence of man.
