Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Machine learning for patent intelligence: opportunities and challenges(2022-12-09); ; ; The analysis of large data volumes for decision-making has evolved from a sideline to a key driver of economic success in the business world of today. As being particularly relevant for technology-oriented organization, patent intelligence – the retrieval, pre-processing and analysis of patent information – has become a relevant means for organization-relevant decisions. This dissertation sheds light using techniques from machine learning for patent intelligence tasks. After summarizing the current literature streams of patent intelligence and machine learning, four publications outline opportunities and challenges that may arise from using supervised or unsupervised machine learning techniques for patent intelligence. For example, supervised machine learning may guide decision making by reducing noise in predictions, for example. Unsupervised machine learning may be useful to explore latent associations between patents when analyzing computationally challenging patent datasets. However, both techniques impose challenges regarding the complexity of the configuration space as well as the transparency and explainability of their underlying algorithms. Implications of this dissertation offer two trade-offs, i.e. in-house versus external procurement and high performance vs. low explanability, and relevant gaps need being addressed by this dissertation open up avenues of further research.Dissertation1643 1708 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Roadmappinggestützte Innovationskommunikation(2013-06-06); ; ; Regarding the development of innovations the intelligent use of technology alone is no longer sufficient for the market success of a new product or service. In addition, coordinated marketing actions are required from the outset. They include a customized set-ting, e.g. concerning the classic marketing mix, including price, product, distribution and communication policy. This dissertation focuses on how to interlock and synchronize the two areas (innovation development and innovation communication) with roadmapping.Dissertation449 1779 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Scanning und Monitoring von Technologiebewegungen : Explorative Untersuchungen mittels semantischer Patentanalysen(2019-12-10); ; ; Technology movements present companies with different challenges, whether it is new competitors as a result of new markets or the risk of the disappearance of existing markets. On the other hand, technology movements lead to opportunities for companies, as new business fields can develop which open up the possibility for further growth. In order to identify the challenges and opportunities associated with technology movements at an early stage, methods of strategic early detection are required. This is where this work starts and uses scanning and monitoring as a search process for the continuous observation of technology movements. The work addresses the question of how the semantic anchor point method based on unstructured patent data has to be implemented in order to be able to detect technology movements early on in different constellations.Dissertation464 331 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Assessment of patent quality - challenges for patent intelligence stakeholders using digital technologies(2024-10-18); ; ; Assessing patent quality is a challenging task in patent management, especially in patent intelligence, for two reasons: firstly, because of the ambiguity of the definition of quality and secondly, because of the handling of a vast amount of patent data, particularly in relation to the qualitative comparative analyses traditionally performed by patent practitioners. This dissertation addresses both challenges and explores how to assess patent quality in patent intelligence using digital technologies by considering patent intelligence stakeholders and their perspectives. After providing a brief contextual background to this dissertation, five publications are presented, one of which defines patent quality and its economic, legal, and technological dimensions, and four of which introduce new methods for assessing these dimensions. For example, machine learning is used to predict the legal quality of patent applications by modeling statutory novelty according to patent law, and text-mining is used to assess the legal quality of a patent by evaluating the patentability of a patent application through semantic comparison. In this context, the dissertation addresses and discusses the challenges associated with the implementation of such digital technologies for patent quality assessment, e.g. the explainability of machine learning algorithms leading to mistrust or the challenge of heterogeneity in text-mining. Entailing several implications for management and scholarship, this dissertation extends stakeholder theory by applying it to patent quality, and provides a more comprehensive and multidimensional view by integrating different stakeholder interests.Dissertation378 697 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, PatMining - Wege zur Erschließung textueller Patentinformationen für das Technologie-Monitoring(2012-12-10); ; ; Patent have often been seen as a useful information source for technology monitoring. Nevertheless, analyzing patent information remains a demanding task, and this is largely due to the ever increasing number and extent of patent documents. A very useful tool for dealing with the information overflow in order to analyze textual patent information can be found in the application of semantic patent analysis. Following up on this, approaches to the content-based analysis of textual patent information for technology monitoring are introduced in this thesis. Relating to the usefulness of patent information for technology monitoring, it is shown that technologies are published in patents on a large scale. Furthermore, patents provide information about new technologies at an early stage. From a methodological point of view, the role of design decisions for concept extraction is highlighted. Additionally, semantic patent analysis is adapted for technology monitoring and its specific tasks.Dissertation393 190 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Technology dynamics in urban innovation: development of a system structure, comparison between countries, analysis of technology interactionsNowadays, the increasing number of people moving from the countryside to cities leads to fast urbanization, along with its troubles, in several cities in the world. Fast urbanization and the way to deal with it, how urban innovation or smart city is applied to cope with issues of urbanization, technological drivers of urban innovation and movements of technologies in this field, etc. are motivations for this research. Furthermore, the difference in strategies for developing technologies between developed and leapfrogging countries is also another motivation for this research to observe the way urban innovation grows in such two different kinds of countries. By using patent analysis, a T-DNA approach and patent co-classification analysis, this research shows technological drivers in different system levels in urban innovation in two countries - the USA and Vietnam, and provides some insights into technology convergence in urban innovation based on the analysis of different system levels (vertical convergence) and within the super-system regarding city infrastructures (horizontal convergence). Therefore, the research may help urban planners, managers and analysts in companies in urban areas in both cases of two countries.Dissertation287 199 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Dissertation368 325 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Claim Mining: Legal-Based Technology Analysis Using the Semantics of Patent Claims(2020-09-08); ; ; Entrepreneurial success within a technology field often derives either from trade secrets or exclusive rights. Consequently, intellectual properties in terms of patents can be seen as a company’s intangible assets that can prohibit competitors from manufacturing, using, selling, offering for sale, or importing patented products or processes. Many approaches have been elaborated for the analysis of patents to gain strategic insights. Examples are provided by data-driven technology analyses to adjust R&D expenses, plan M&A activities, or create technology roadmaps. However, recent approaches lack both sufficient semantic analysis of patent claims and the provision of scientific-based strategic insights. From a legal perspective, patent claims are the most crucial element within patents because exclusive rights derive from patent claims and their features based on patent law. In particular, recent approaches apply the same natural language processes (NLPs) on title, abstract, description, and claims, even though the legal part of patent claims strongly differs in its wording and syntactic structure. Former approaches neglected claim-specific information, such as dependency level in terms of independent, dependent, and multiple dependent claims, as well as the claim categories (e.g. product, manufacturing process claim) defined in the preamble of each claim. This cumulative dissertation aims to overcome these drawbacks by introducing a claim mining framework. Consequently, untapped opportunities for several application fields within technology analysis are explored. Furthermore, this framework provides claim-specific NLPs in terms of both a claim pre-processing that tags claim’s dependency levels and categories and a claim processing that applies claim-specific stopword filters and term weightings to implement similarity measurements. In doing so, application fields within technology analyses, such as information retrieval, technology forecasting, strategic technology planning, patent quality and value identification, and competitor analysis are addressed. Finally, theoretical and managerial implications are drawn to demonstrate the usefulness of this work.Dissertation1103 325 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item-typ:Veröffentlichung, Betriebswirtschaftliche Patentportfoliobewertung - eine informationswissenschaftliche Perspektive(2008-07-09); ; ; Today most of a firm's value is composed of its intangible assets. Patents as one type of intangible assets play a crucial role for technology oriented firms since they help preventing imitation of the firms' products. Therefore, valuing patents from a management science perspective plays an important role. Up to now the value of individual patents or patent portfolios has been estimated assuming that patents possess an individual and separable value, which would ultimately imply that the value of a patent portfolio consists of the sum of the individual patents' values. This however, contradicts different patent management strategies that rely on interdependencies between individual patents, for instance fencing important patents by additional property rights, or surrounding patents from competitors in order to limit their freedom to operate. Therefore, interdependencies between individual patents should have an impact on patent and patent portfolio values. In this contribution a dataset from biotechnology and pharmaceutical firms is used. It is investigated by means of established indicators from information science if interdependencies between patents, controlling for several other indicators, in fact have an impact on portfolio value. In advance, several studies were conducted that aimed to:a)demonstrate the status quo of patent analysis,b)investigate the usefulness of several patentometric value indicators empirically,c)investigate several text-mining approaches that can be employed to measure similarities and thus, interdependencies, between documents, andd)determine time-intervals between patent applications and finally, their impact on portfolio value. It could be shown that patent clusters within a firm that may represent patent fencing strategies - ultimately representing interdependencies - that have a significant and positive effect on portfolio value. This could mean that current patent portfolio valuation methodologies should be reconsidered in the future.Dissertation334 181
