Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Improving the information flows and business process in global maritime logistics chains considering digitization and digitalization aspects(2021-05-21); ; ; Digitization and digitalization have gradually transformed the maritime industry for over 60 years. Technologies are developing continuously, and applications are designed to meet business requirements. This work has researched how digitization and digitalization influence the maritime industry from the perspectives of effects on information flow, business, and logistics operations, based on the methodology of literature review and case study. This work aims at providing an analysis of the digitalization process in the maritime industry, considering the established, developing, and future ICTs and applications. It finds out that digitalization has influenced all the commercial, regulatory, logistical, and financial processes in the global business and supply chain. As a traditional and important transportation mode of global business, the maritime industry has been through several changes and ushered in a vision for future development under digitalization. By identifying the changes and trends, it is useful for international organizations, governments, and authorities to make decisions for future strategies; it facilitates the maritime actors to have a glimpse of the digitalization process to catch opportunities and challenges; it also provides IT companies with tips on demands of the applications in the maritime industry.doctoral thesis553 595 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Regional Orientated Global Logistics Networks Redesign with Respect to the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)(2020-10-08); ; This study applies a system thinking view to argue that transportation infrastructure is a strong driving forces for the dynamic evolution process of the GLN. Especially in context of the BRI, with its large scale and broad scope transportation infrastructure construction and upgrade, the spatial structure of GLN is rapidly altering due to the changing competitiveness of some logistics nodes and links. These changes can further induces a sequence of dynamic process, such as development of local logistics industries, MNEs’ relocation behaviors, industrialization of local regions, etc, hence substantially shift the pattern of the GLN on a long-term view. Case studies of Piraeus port and Gwadar port were conducted to validate the impacts of ports infrastructure improvements on global shipping network and its potential for regional economic growth. Apart from sea port, a very important aspect is the improvements of land connectivity and the construction of dry ports. With the operation of CR Express, China and Europe are connected passing through the vast territory of landlocked countries in between. Through investigating the case of Khorgos dry port city, the study also presents the pattern shift induced the large potential of land logistics nodes.doctoral thesis464 679 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Economic and strategic implications of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)(2022-10-24); ; China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is one of the corridors of China's Belt & Road Initiative (BRI) which China first proposed in 2013. It is 21st Century version of the Ancient Silk Road with an aim to connect China with the rest of the world through road and maritime trade routes. Similarly, the planned outlook of CPEC manifests linkages with Central Asia, Africa and Europe. It comprises of roads, railway transportation networks, energy power plants, a port and special economic zones development, and cross border optical fibre cable installation (Ministry of Planning, Development and Reform, 2017). Given the history of mutual trust between the two countries, CPEC was approved in April 2015 without any resistance from either sides. While it serves China as a gateway to other regions, for Pakistan it has multi-fold relevance which is the main research theme of this dissertation. This research analyzes CPEC's economic implications for Pakistan and strategic implications for both Pakistan and China. While around 147 countries signed the BRI, the response has not been warm from all countries. While some consider it a part of China's strategic plan to gain dominion that will result into a new world order, others like India, are more concerned about regional hegemony. There is an on-going economic crisis that started with COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and it got worse due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It will not be absurd to state that the biggest blow came in the form of energy supply shortages. This crisis serves as a reminder of how important it is to secure energy supply. However, China foresaw this looming crisis and this is one of the motivations behind BRI in general and CPEC in particular. If succeeded, CPEC will present China with a new trade route for its energy supply which currently goes through the Strait of Malacca. Furthermore, this research undertakes an in-depth analysis of several economic implications of CPEC; namely, how infrastructure investment may or may not alter the economic growth trajectory of a country and the role of redesigned supply chain and logistics in boosting local industry. Last but not the least, the much contentious topic of debt-trap is also discussed. The study relies on both quantitative and qualitative research methods depending on the nature of the designed research questions.doctoral thesis438 308
