Abstract:
This work comprises a preliminary investigation for observation of ocean bottom pressure and derivation of linear vertical movements of the seafloor. A statistical analysis of ocean bottom pressure data after removed tidal signals has been conducted. This includes noise analysis (effective resolution of the sensor), determination of the individual long-term drift of each data set and a statistical drift analysis. Subsequently, several possible impact factors on the ocean bottom pressure have been studied, in order to facilitate signal analysis of a future ocean bottom station. Both pressure variations at the sea surface as well as activities at the seafloor have been considered. As the long-term drift has turned to be unpredictable, slow linear ocean bottom movements are removed by applying a linear drift correction and cannot be studied. Thus, a new measuring method has been developed, which uses a differential pressure sensor. The theoretical approach is presented in detail.
