Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Education for sustainable development in Chinese secondary chemistry education under consideration of Confucian ecological ethics(2023-08-23); ; ; ; This dissertation is a cumulative doctoral work. It contains four international journal articles. Two published articles are literature reviews, while the other two articles under review are case studies. This dissertation work focuses on the inclusion of Confucian ecological ethics in chemistry education for sustainability at Chinese secondary schools to promote education for sustainable development, for devoting to the cultural aspects of scientific literacy. In detail, this research aims at developing and implementing teaching interventions about fusing Confucian ecological ethics into chemistry education for sustainability in mainland China, with a socio-scientific issue of disposable plastic takeout food containers use. It is based on the related literature investigations and the development of the theoretical frameworks. The first and second journal articles portray the contexts and theoretical frameworks of this research. The first article illustrates the state of the art of chemistry education for sustainable development in mainland China by a systematic literature review based on leading international and national databases. It is that Chinese chemistry education for sustainable development was at the initial stage and lacked the related teaching models and examples; and tertiary education was better than secondary education, with more related examples and multiple instruction methods. The current Chinese high school chemistry curriculum standards underscore the societal aspect of chemistry education and nurture students’ awareness of sustainable development. This further proves the meaningfulness of this research. Hence, the second journal article presents a theoretical framework for the design of the teaching interventions for integrating Confucianism into Chemistry education towards sustainability. It was developed by a systematic reflection of related academic publications in related databases on Confucianism, sustainability, and science education from a philosophical perspective. There are many connections between sustainability and Confucian ecological ethics, such as respecting nature and holistic thinking. The Confucian way of thinking and views of nature differ from the Western, and Confucian harmony with nature and humans could be beneficial for the global community. The third and fourth journal articles describe the development and implementation of two lesson plans and thus present related practical learning examples and empirical evidence for this research. They display the integration of Confucianism into chemistry education for sustainability at Chinese upper secondary schools. The third journal article depicts a lesson plan designed based on the framework developed in the second article. It contains an introduction, learning related scientific knowledge, a role-playing debate, and a reflection, referring to the socio-scientific issue of plastic takeout food container use. It was implemented at one suburban Beijing public high school in June 2022 online, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Two learning groups of 10th-Grade students (N=79) joined the intervention. The lesson plan was evaluated by a feedback questionnaire. According to the analysis of the students’ feedback questionnaire, the following results were obtained: most students were motivated to learn and satisfied with the teaching methods; Confucianism can improve their environmental awareness; and they thought Confucian ecological ethics and sustainable development in chemistry education were interconnected. In the last journal article, another lesson plan was designed based on the positive results of Confucianism for chemistry education for sustainability. Moreover, some researchers called for nurturing students’ deep understanding of Chinese traditional cultures in chemistry classrooms. The lesson plan in the fourth journal article was designed including four phases: an introduction, understanding Confucianism and sustainability, an application with the issue of plastics use, and a reflection with a feedback questionnaire. Sixty-five 10th-Grade students at an urban key public high school in Beijing participated online in this intervention in January 2023 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The feedback questionnaires were analyzed by descriptive statistics and qualitative content analysis. Their assignments and one teacher’s observation were also analyzed as references. Finally, this article found that most students were engaged in learning and satisfied with the teaching methods; the lesson made them open-minded, culturally confident, and knowledgeable of the complexities of chemical issues; and most of them acknowledged the active role of Confucian ecological ethics in chemistry education towards sustainability. In summary, this dissertation shows the sound role of Confucian ecological ethics in Chinese chemistry education towards sustainability and enriches multi-worldviews to the cultural aspects of science education.doctoral thesis425 930 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, The inclusion of indigenous knowledge in science and chemistry education to promote education for sustainable development (The case of indigenous knowledge of the Baduy community in Indonesia)(2021-05-04); ; ; This dissertation is a cumulative doctoral work. It consists of six main chapters outlining five journal articles and a book chapter that discuss a literature review and four studies. The dissertation studies focus on the inclusion of indigenous knowledge (IK) in science and chemistry education to promote education for sustainable development (ESD). The first chapter analyses the general literature background and research framework of the study. This chapter presents an analytical literature review discussed in "A Multi-Perspective Reflection on How Indigenous Knowledge and Related Ideas Can Improve Science Education for Sustainability" (Zidny et al., 2020). It encompasses the theoretical framework, didactic model, educational research framework, and the educational values of the inclusion of IK in science and chemistry education. The second chapter outlines the research background of the Indonesian science curriculum and the current state of implementation of ESD in Indonesia. The significance of indigenous communities for this study is also presented with a special focus on the Baduy community in the Banten province, Java Island, Indonesia. The profile of the Baduy community is discussed in the book chapter "Indigenous Knowledge as a Socio-Cultural Context of Science to Promote Transformative Education for Sustainable Development: Insights into a Case Study on The Baduy Community (Indonesia)” (Zidny & Eilks, 2018) The third chapter presents four major studies that are part of research-based development of didactic teaching-learning-designs on the inclusion of IK and perspectives into science and chemistry education. The first study in this chapter (section 3.1) attempts to map out and explore indigenous, science-related knowledge from the Baduy community. From the findings, an educational analysis was conducted to identify contexts and content for science learning as well as for integrating indigenous science (ISc) into socioscientific issues-based education. This study is part of the book chapter by Zidny and Eilks (2018) and a paper entitled "Exploring Indigenous Science to Identify Contents and Contexts for Science Learning to Promote Education for Sustainable Development" (Zidny et al., 2021). The second study in chapter 3 (section 3.2) focuses on implementing a first teaching intervention on the integration of IK and Western modern science (WMSc) in chemistry education. The teaching intervention adopted model 3 of the ESD-based pedagogical approaches suggested by Burmeister et al. (2012) focusing on the controversial sustainability issue of pesticides use. The lesson was implemented in two groups on different educational levels, encompassing upper secondary school and university chemistry student teachers. The lesson's main activities start from the controversial issues of pesticides use to encourage learners to think critically, express their arguments, and solve chemistry problems in classroom task activities. Feedback from the learners about the lesson and the learning design was collected. This study is described in "Integrating perspectives from indigenous knowledge and Western science in secondary and higher chemistry learning to contribute to sustainability education" (Zidny & Eilks, 2020). The analysis and evaluation of the students’ activities is discussed in the third study in chapter 3 (section 3.3). This study attempted to explore the initial level of students’ arguments and their ability to link the context with chemistry concepts. Based on the findings, information from the analysis was used to evaluate and improve the learning design. This study is described in "A case study on students' application of chemical concepts and use of arguments in teaching on the sustainability-oriented chemistry issue of pesticides use under the inclusion of different scientific worldviews" (Zidny et al., 2021, under review a). The final study in chapter 3 (section 3.4) focuses on a second teaching intervention on the inclusion of ISc as a starting point to promote green and sustainable chemistry education. The teaching intervention adopted models 1 and 2 of ESD-based approaches suggested by Burmeister et al. (2012), namely adopting green chemistry lab practices and content. The lesson was implemented in an environmental chemistry course (elective course) with second-year undergraduate student teachers in Indonesia. This study is described in "Learning about phytochemical aspects of botanical pesticides adapted from ethnoscience as a contribution to green and sustainable chemistry education" (Zidny & Eilks, under review b) Chapter 5 summarizes all the studies in the research project and outlines the implication of the studies. In chapter 6, the published works of the thesis are presented.doctoral thesis709 456 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Socio-scientific Issues-based science education as a promising response to the call for more relevant and societally embedded science learning in Indonesia(2021-03-30); ; ; The following dissertation is a cumulative thesis which consists of four articles and one book chapter. The articles are all written in English. Three articles have been published in international journals for science education research, one article is under review, a book chapter was published in the book of collection of invited papers by the 24th Symposium on Chemistry and Science Education held at the University of Bremen, in June 1-3, 2018. The first 3 articles are based on studies regarding socio-scientific issue (SSI)-based education in Indonesia, which involved science teachers, either in-service science teachers (ISTs) or pre-service science teachers (PSTs). These studies serve as empirical base derived from the experience and view of teachers for the needs to develop SSI-based science teaching materials which support the SSI-based education movement in Indonesia. As the follow up of the empirical studies, an SSI-based teaching unit using an Indonesian context was developed and implemented. The first and second studies are respectively about the ISTs and the PSTs experience and views regarding SSI-based education. The challenges that were considered barriers for teachers to incorporate SSIs in their science teaching in class and potentials of SSI-based instruction in Indonesian school settings, particularly about the students’ and the teachers’ competencies that can be enhanced, as well as the students’ characters that can be developed through SSI-based education, were explored. In addition to that, topics potentially of value to incorporate SSI-based instruction according to teachers’ views were identified. Furthermore, the teachers’ intension to implement SSI-based science instruction in their teaching despite the potential challenges and focusing benefits of corresponding teaching practices was explored. The third study is a case study about the PSTs teaching experience in using daily life contexts when they teach in their teaching internship program. How the PSTs taught environmental pollution, which can be considered as highly related to SSIs, was investigated. Furthermore, whether or not the PSTs taught the topic in an SSI-based teaching fashion was explored. The fourth study is about the implementation of an SSI-based teaching unit using palm oil-based biodiesel in Indonesia. According to the first three studies, involving ISTs and PSTs, the teachers rarely teach under SSI framework. Moreover, at their teacher education program, PSTs never learned about the SSI-framework during their courses. The teachers acknowledged some challenges to conduct SSI-based instruction, such as students’ lack of competencies, teachers’ lack of experience and expertise in SSI-based teaching, the curriculum constrains, as well as time limitations. However, the teachers had positive views about the students’ competencies and characters that can be enhanced through SSI-based education. Despite all the challenges and potentials of SSI-based teaching in their eyes, the teachers would like to implement SSI-based instruction in their classes. The third study showed that SSI was not intentionally used in the PSTs lesson plans nor in the teaching practices although the PSTs considered that the topic of environmental pollution fulfilled the characteristic of SSIs. By the result and discussion of these three studies, it is suggested that science teaching based on SSIs should be more taught at the teacher education programs, either in the pedagogical or the science courses. By giving the science teacher candidates experience on how science class is undertaken in the light of SSI-based instruction, it is hoped that it will increase their knowledge, experience, and expertise about SSI-based education and serves as their reference how to integrate SSI-based teaching when they will become a teacher in the future. For that reason, an SSI-based teaching unit derived from the palm oil-based issue in Indonesia was developed and implemented to the PSTs at a chemistry unit. The student teachers clearly gave positive feedback about the teaching unit. As another SSI, the thesis suggest the topic of genetically modified rice.doctoral thesis620 760 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Representations of Selected Aspects of Chemistry in Secondary School Chemistry Textbooks from Different Chinese Communities(2019-07-02); ; ; This thesis is composed of four studies. It focuses on representations of selected aspects of chemistry in secondary school chemistry textbooks from different Chinese Communities, namely from the Peoplea s Republic of China, Taiwan, and the Chinese minority in Malaysia. The first study looks at the representation of the intended curriculum in grade 10 chemistry textbooks, identifying similarities and differences concerning the curriculum orientation of the seven sets of textbooks (more detail in Chapter 3, Section 3.1). The first study finds different characteristics of the intended curriculum in different Chinese communities, even though the sample shares similar ethnics, language and cultural background. This outcome, in turn, inspires us to conduct another two parallel studies (Chapter 3, Section 3.2&3.3), such as redox reactions and practical work. Chapter 3, Section 3.2 introduces a study on the analysis of the visual representation of redox reactions in upper secondary chemistry textbooks from PR China, Taiwan and Malaysia. The study aims at displaying how chemistry textbooks deal with visual representations of redox reactions, and further exploring if the visualizations provide any indications of the intended curriculum orientation. Chapter 3, Section 3.3 is a brief look on how practical work is presented in grade 10 chemistry textbooks and corresponding experimental textbooks from PR China, Taiwan and the Chinese minority in Malaysia. Specific instruments are adapted to analyze the type of learning, intended learning outcomes, inquiry level, and studentsa involvement, to give a basic overview of features of practical work in transferring the intended curriculum. This study explores how practical work links two domains of knowledge from observables to ideas, and makes a contribution to the body of research of practical work in secondary school chemistry education through a Chinese perspective. During the conduction on the aforementioned study, new Upper Secondary School Chemistry Curriculum Standard was released in 2017 (USSCCS) in PR China. Because the official curriculum standard serves as the guideline for textbook design, the release of the new curriculum standard inspired us to explore the differences between the new Upper Secondary School Chemistry Curriculum Standard (2017 USSCCS) and the prior Upper Secondary School Chemistry Curriculum Standard (2003 USSCCS), which are both officially released by the Ministry of Education (see Chapter 3, Section 3.4). Generally, these results show that intended curricula delivered by Taiwanese textbooks take a high degree of contextualization, while textbooks from Malaysia use a rather traditional approach. Textbooks from the Peoplea s Republic of China lie somewhere between the textbooks from Taiwan and Malaysia. Chapter 3 gives more details about the general information (Section 3.1) and richer details related to redox reactions (Section 3.2) and practical work (Section 3.3) in corresponding textbooks.doctoral thesis483 459 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Case studies on the curriculum and pedagogy in chemistry and science education in Syria today(2017-05-02); ; ; Abstarct This dissertation intended to analyze the nature of the science teaching in Syria with a special emphasis on chemistry education (Chapter 1). It was operated through a triangle-based study of the intended curriculum, teachersa and studentsa views. The 10th grade Syrian intended chemistry curriculum has been analyzed as a case based on an analysis of the official grade-10 chemistry school textbook in comparison to six other chemistry textbooks from a purposeful sample of Arab countries, namely Algeria, Egypt, Kuwait, Palestine, Jordan and Saudi-Arabia. These countries are economically, societally, cultural and geographically diverse, but they all are part of the Arab world and use Arabic as a common language (Chapter 2). The second part of this study analyzed teachersa views on chemistry and physics teaching based on interviews. Instances of the interviews were the use of ICT, laboratory work, including the history of science in teaching, and the teachersa view on the national curriculum (Chapter 3). In a third step, grade-10 science studentsa attitudes and views towards science education were surveyed by interviews with respect to their possibilities for participation in the science classroom, practical work, out-of-school science education, and their current views on potential careers in science and technology (Chapter 4).doctoral thesis479 292
