Als empirische Anker der Argumentation dienen drei Fallbeispiele individuellen, organisationalen und politischen Entscheidens.journal article300 488 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Against all odds: the ‘loyalty’ of small investorsThe share of small investors leaving the financial market in autumn 2008 was no greater than in previous, smaller crises. Why is there no mass exodus at such junctures? Why do most small investors practice ‘loyalty’ instead of ‘exit’ (Hirschman)? Even more importantly, why do they enter the financial market at all since its ‘hypercomplexity’ exposes them to an experience of confusion and helplessness? Behavioural economics provides some partial answers, but they remain too abstract and ahistorical and give a very reductionist picture of decision-making. In reaction to this incomplete understanding of the ‘loyalty’ puzzle, I will present two important explanatory factors from sociological reasoning: collectively shared stories as reducers of ‘hypercomplexity’ in which small investors’ decision-making is embedded, and the rebuilding of the welfare state, which forces more and more people to become small investors and stay in the market despite serious losses.journal articleBand:9Heft:1167 284 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Two Worlds of Academic Publishing: Chemistry and German Sociology in ComparisonThe communication infrastructure of modern science is provided by profitoriented business firms: the publishing houses which print and distribute academic books and journals. Surprisingly, beyond some rather superficial impressions, in science studies little is known about how academic publishers work—in particular, how markets for books and journals look like, how publication decisions are taken, and how the interplay with the scientific community is arranged. We address these questions with a focus on the relation between economic considerations of publishers, on the one hand, and the requirements of scientific communication, on the other. Our contrasting case studies are a very large world- wide operating publisher with regard to chemistry publications and a national publishing house of German sociology. At first, we show how the rather different business approaches of the two types of academic publishing houses look like. Both approaches could reach stability for some time which means not only that publishers earned money according to their profit aspirations but also that the communication requirements of science were sufficiently met. Afterwards, we point out the instabilities that have begun to arise in both fields and may sooner or later erode the former fit of profit-making and scientific communication.journal articleBand:52160 229 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, The autonomy of modern sport: dangerous and endangeredFrom the point of view of sociological theories of societal differentiation, modern sport is one of about a dozen differentiated sub-systems of modern society. This analytical perspective raises the question of the systemic autonomy of modern sport. This question shall be dealt with by distinguishing further the two differentiated second-order sub-systems of sport: top athletics and leisure sport. Whereas for top athletics a dangerous autonomy – in the final end, dangerous to itself - can be diagnosed, leisure sport is characterized by an endangered autonomy. Interestingly, coping with these two very different problems of sub-systemic autonomy relies on a mutually legitimating double interchange among top athletics and popular sports. Thus, both sub-systems of modern sport cannot exist without and separated from each other.journal articleBand:2Heft:1178 313 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Wie hängen „Work Logics“, Vorstellungen gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalts und politische Orientierungen zusammen? : Studienreport(2024-10-23); ; ; ; Dieser Studienbericht beschreibt die qualitative Studie "Work Logics" die im Rahmen des Forschungszentrums Gesellschaftlicher Zusammenhalt (FGZ) an der Universität Bremen durchgeführt wurde. Das Forschungsprojekt untersuchte Zusammenhänge zwischen sog. Work Logics (Oesch 2006a; 2006b), Vorstellungen gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalts und politischen Orientierungen. Report300 451 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Modernity as a functionally differentiated capitalist society: A general theoretical model.A conceptualization of capitalism as a consequence of functional differentia-tion is proposed. The general theoretical model of a functionally differentiated capitalist society is outlined in four steps based on these keywords: functional differentiation; capitalist economy; capitalist society; welfare state. This model grasps the essential characteristics of the analytical prototype of a capitalist so-ciety. What are its basic components that, working together, generate this kind of society’s structural dynamics?journal articleBand:18236 411 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Beyond Humboldt? The relationship between teaching and research in European university systemsThree patterns of the relationship of teaching and research in European university systems can be distinguished: the Humboldtian, the post-Humboldtian, and the pre-Humboldtian pattern. The distinction rests on the kind and degree of differentiation of both university tasks in terms of situations, roles, resources, organisations, or societal sub-systems. Recent developments exhibit two main trends. First, the Humboldtian and the pre-Humboldtian pattern are increasingly criticised for their deficits. Thus, there is some movement towards an emerging post-Humboldtian pattern. Second, however, this new pattern is nowhere stabilised by now especially because it is in the interest of professors to maintain or establish the Humboldtian pattern. These developments are described and assessed with respect to their consequences for research at universities.journal articleBand:27Heft:6232 531
