Biography
Dharma Andrea Reyes Macaya is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Biogeochemistry and Paleoceanography at the Chilean National Centre for Rivers, Invasions, and Systems (IRIS). She is a guest researcher in the Marine Sedimentology team at MARUM (University of Bremen) and the Past Climates group at Heriot-Watt University.
Her research focuses on reconstructing ocean oxygenation, ventilation, and circulation in the Equatorial and Southeast Pacific from the Pliocene to the present. Dharma’s work addresses land-to-sea connectivity by establishing geochemical baselines of riverine systems and the Atacama Desert. This baseline data will be used to isolate terrestrial lithogenic signals from marine authigenic enrichments to calibrate redox-sensitive trace metals in bulk sediments and foraminiferal calcite. Additionally, she validates the stable isotope composition of benthic foraminifera to evaluate bottom-water ventilation under low-oxygen conditions.
Dharma also leads community science and transdisciplinary research initiatives, collaborating with local organizations to monitor environmental data through popular education and artistic-scientific methods. She is a member of the PAGES-PO2 and MASIS-SCOR international working groups.
